About The Position

The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction, purchasing and contracting for goods and services, maintaining facilities, managing state vehicles, acquiring and disposing of real property, and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally, the department manages many of the state's advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the state's population that have been traditionally underserved. The Department of Administration serves as the business manager for North Carolina state government and provides leadership to state government agencies for the effective, efficient, economical and equitable delivery of services to the public. The department also provides assistance and services to several advocacy programs that serve diverse segments of the state’s population that have traditionally been underserved. The agency’s mission directs departmental efforts to: acquire, develop and maintain properties and facilities; create and operate an efficient system to purchase and dispose of goods and services to meet the needs of government agencies; provide excellent operational services to state employees; achieve fair and equitable opportunities and representation for various segments of the population that have special needs; and to provide administrative support to independent state government agencies. The North Carolina Department of Administration (NCDOA) is seeking applicants for a Maintenance/Construction Tech III for our Facility Management division located in Raleigh, NC. The primary mission of Facility Management is to provide a safe and healthy work environment for employees and the public in a cost effective and energy efficient manner. This mission is accomplished by performing routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance to state facilities owned by and allocated to the Department of Administration.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of frame and finish carpentry tools and techniques and cabinetmaking tools and techniques.
  • Ability to read and visualize architectural plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Considerable knowledge of a variety of building materials and finishes, and their characteristics and uses.
  • Ability to measure and perform mathematical calculations necessary in estimating materials, the construction and renovation of buildings, and building office furnishings.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in frame and finish carpentry, building office furnishings, roofing, and painting.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate crew members.
  • Ability to instruct and train employees.
  • Physical ability to carry, hold, and install building materials in the construction and renovation of buildings.
  • Ability to identify and problem solve project issues.
  • Ability to communicate with other employees. supervisors and management.
  • The individual hired for this position must be familiar with building life and safety codes.
  • The work requires standing for long periods of time and performing manual labor, which involves possessing physical strength to handle and lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
  • The Individual should be capable of crawling, working at heights up to sixty-five feet or more.
  • Some areas may require the use of a respirator and other personal protective equipment. Medical certification is required to verify the individuals' ability to wear and use a respirator. This is a condition of employment.
  • The employee is required to wear a uniform, picture ID badge, use safety equipment and follow safety regulations which are provided by the state.
  • Candidate must present proof of a valid NC Driver's License and proof of an acceptable driving record.
  • Employee must complete Asbestos Operation Maintenance and Removal Training.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and two years of journey level carpentry experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising and planning for a crew of carpenters working on projects involving the cabinet shop, special projects, building cabinets, staining and finishing work of State-owned buildings.
  • Performing a variety of journey-level building maintenance tasks including frame and finish construction carpentry could include flooring work, laying carpet and ceramic tile.
  • Develop schedules and plans for painting, finishing furniture, installing insulation and mold removal.
  • All work completed according to sketches and specifications
  • Direct involvement in Governor’s Events such as Christmas Tree lighting
  • Operate construction equipment such as Tow Motor, 125 Genie Lift, 120’ Genie Lift, and 35’ Lull Lift
  • Carpenters in Facility Management are often required to provide a wide variety of building trade services.
  • Managing time, work order and service orders in Aim and Fiori.
  • Working with Building Coordinators and Vendors to develop quotes.
