About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to provide supervisory, administrative, and engineering work re: maintenance, repair, and construction operations on school campus and physical plant. Position is responsible for recruitment and subsequent supervision of staff, contractors, oversees capital projects associated with facility upkeep and operation of the physical plant including fire, safety, and security aspects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required;
  • Minimum of four (4) years of progressive experience in facility maintenance, construction, or a related field, with at least three (3) years building or mechanical trades including one (1) year of supervisory experience in construction, maintenance and/or repair of buildings and facilities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to perform physical duties including lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and working in various weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of various trades, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general building maintenance.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations, building codes, and best practices in maintenance and construction.
  • Excellent leadership, communication (both written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in using maintenance management software and standard office applications.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Experience working in an educational or institutional setting is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn and utilize basic American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate effectively with deaf and hard-of-hearing staff and students.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate a team of maintenance and construction personnel, including plumbers, electricians, carpenters, HVAC technicians, and general laborers.
  • Plan, schedule, and assign daily work tasks, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and adherence to project timelines.
  • Oversee and perform inspections of facilities, equipment, and grounds to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, and compliance issues.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs for all school systems and infrastructure.
  • Estimate project costs, prepare material requisitions, and manage inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Coordinate with external contractors and vendors for specialized services or materials as needed.
  • Ensure all maintenance and construction activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations, building codes, and safety standards.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests outside of regular business hours as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
  • Provide regular reports to management on project status, budget adherence, and team performance.
  • Implement and enforce school policies and procedures related to facility operations and safety.
