Operates and maintains direct digital control (DDC) and building automation systems (BAS) to provide a safe, comfortable learning environment and use resources efficiently.

  • Troubleshoots and repairs, on site and remotely, DDC and BAS systems including hardware and software.
  • Responds to service calls from leadership and those generated by BAS and DDC systems.
  • Restores the operation of heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
  • Performs programming using various software packages to maintain and improve system operation.
  • Identifies energy savings opportunities that can be achieved through repairs or changes of sequence in HVAC systems.
  • Assists in the commission of new systems and coordinates checkout and warranty calls by installation contractors.
  • Identifies system deficiencies in new BAS and DDC installations.
  • Coordinates with other trades including mechanical and electrical to resolve repair issues.
  • Coordinates with the environmental group to make HVAC-related repairs that may contribute to indoor air quality problems.
  • Initiates service calls.
  • Escalates service calls as required when the operation of HVAC systems cannot be restored in a timely manner.
  • Supports the efforts of other HVAC and Building Automation Technicians.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of HVAC equipment controlled by BAS systems through the Energy Management Supervisor both at schools and remotely through operator workstations.
  • Records and maintains accurate records of work performed, time and materials used.
  • Maintains supplies, materials, and equipment inventory for maintenance of BAS and DDC systems.
  • Communicates appropriately and frequently with faculty, school administrators, supervisor/manager(s) and other employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
  • One year of experience in the operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment with building automation and/or direct digital control systems.
  • Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent.
  • Knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
  • Knowledge of direct digital control (DDC) and building automation systems (BAS).
  • Knowledge of personal computers and software.
  • Skill in the operation, repair, programming, and maintenance of HVAC, BAS, and/or DDC systems.
  • Skill in the operation of personal computers and software:must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel to be able to complete work order, provide reports on work completed and create spreadsheets to record data and information.
  • Skill in communicating effectively.
  • Ability to learn Baltimore County Public School system safety, procedural and policy guidelines, and applicable government regulations.
  • Ability to train others to operate, program, and repair building automation systems and direct digital control systems.
  • Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency.
  • In addition to working the assigned work schedule, persons appointed to this class work scheduled overtime and must be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to overtime calls before and after standard scheduled hours of work.
  • Persons appointed to this class may be requested to work an alternative schedule or shift temporarily as designated by supervisor.
  • Persons appointed to this class are designated as essential personnel and as such may be required to work during emergency events.
  • A license to drive in the State of Maryland and the ability to drive a pickup truck or van is required.
  • License(s) if/when required for this position are subject to verification and must be maintained in good and active standing during the duration of employment without lapse. Lapse or void in valid/active licensure may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
  • Some positions in this class must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment.
  • Persons holding a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.
