About The Position

Incumbents in this classification are responsible for assisting experienced mechanics in performing skilled-level plant maintenance activities related to monitoring mechanical systems to ensure proper operations. This is an entry-level position focused on on-the- job training and classroom instruction to develop technical skills. Apprentices work under moderate supervision as part of a team to learn the methods, tools, and materials used in trade.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED or any combination of equivalent experience and education.
Valid Driver’s License
Ability to obtain mobile equipment certifications
Knowledge of safe work practices; basic plumbing principles; welding principles; and heavy equipment operation principles.
Skill in adhering to safe work practices; utilizing basic hand and power tools; reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals; and communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with coworkers and the Public.

Responsibilities

Assists in installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial machinery and mechanical systems.
Performs routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs under the guidance of a senior mechanic.
Learns to diagnose and repair mechanical machinery, such as pumps, motors, gear reducers, and valves related to wastewater operations.
Assists with the disassembly and rebuilding of equipment, such as centrifuges.
Troubleshoots mechanical systems to identify and address problems.
Performs minor fabrication of parts as required.
Assists with the repair and maintenance of digester building equipment, cell gates, cell blowers, and water lines.
Must meet regular attendance requirements.
Must be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers and citizens.
Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.
Performs other duties as assigned.
This position is deemed essential during inclement weather situations, and must report to or remain at work, even when administrative closings are announced, as determined by the Department Head.
