About The Position

Assists a Maintenance Section Supervisor in overseeing work completed by the crews and contractors, which provides a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Leads the work of Transportation Maintenance Crew Chiefs, technical and clerical staff. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Maint Section Assistant II: 6 years in roadway maintenance or construction related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • Maint Section Assistant III: 7 years in roadway maintenance or construction related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application.
  • Considerable knowledge of: Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Inventory/stock control procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Expert skill in: Scheduling work assignments
  • Using light highway equipment
  • Proficient skill in: Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and externa
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Extensive knowledge in: Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat: below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25lbs
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts
  • Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
  • Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the maintenance section supervisor in overseeing the work of the section and contracted crews including scheduling equipment, material and personnel necessary for section projects.
  • Assists with planning, coordinating and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
  • Completes reports on damaged railings and bridges.
  • Ensures all projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Inspects road conditions, work-in-progress and work completed by the crews and contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials, supplies and personnel.
  • May operate light and heavy roadway equipment.
  • Responsible for operations of section in absence of supervisor.
  • Trains employees on the use of equipment and procedures.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assists in budget preparation for the section.
  • Handles public complaints.
