About The Position

The Rotating Equipment Craftsman (Machinist/Millwright) Intern, Billings Refinery works with the maintenance department of the refinery. Interns will observe the repair and troubleshooting of rotating equipment within the facility. This work takes place in all areas of the refinery, outside exposed to the weather elements and to blowing air, heat, noise and vibration. The refinery processes involve hazardous and volatile materials under high temperatures and pressures. The work may take place at heights on vessels and towers and/or in confined spaces. Interns are expected to actively participate in their respective Craft team, participate in conversations, and ask questions to develop personal learning and gain workplace experience.

Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Currently enrolled as of application date in a Machine Tool Technology or similar (including Industrial Maintenance, etc) Associate's Degree Program with at least 2 semesters complete
  • Currently hold and able to maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA each semester
  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform/comply with the following:
  • Climb ladders and stairs (up to 50 feet) to perform equipment maintenance and don fall protection when required
  • Raise and transport articles weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Walk, stand, stoop, climb, sit, and carry material daily on even and uneven terrain
  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toed shoes, ear/eye protection)
  • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly
  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases that may be under high pressure and heat
  • Entails exposure to high and continuous levels of noise, vibration, extreme temperatures and hot equipment, hydrocarbon vapors, fumes, and the potential exposure to refinery chemicals, including but not limited to, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, benzene, etc.
  • Read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits and instruction manuals

Responsibilities

  • Observes the repairing, altering, fabricating, removing, installing, assembling, troubleshooting, and servicing a wide variety of rotating process equipment, such as pumps, compressors, motors, etc.
  • Observes close tolerance work on metal machining equipment such as lathes
  • Observes the maintaining and operating of equipment and tools
  • Climbing of equipment and the ability to work at elevated heights is occasionally required as is the ability to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Witness the Permit to Work process
  • Witness energy isolation (e.g. Lock, Tag & Try)
  • Learn about health, safety and environmental processes and hazards
