About The Position

The Machining & Fabrication Assistant works closely with the Scientific Research Technologist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering to develop skills in machining, fabrication, and general shop support. The position prepares the Machine Shop Assistant for future technical or instructional roles supporting faculty and student research in mechanical engineering. This position is open to current students and external applicants, at least 16 years of age. This is an hourly, part-time position, for approximately 20 hours per week. Hourly rate between $22-$25.

Requirements

  • Technical background, trade training, or experience with tools, machinery, or fabrication processes
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Ability to read and write to perform job duties
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn new skills
  • Dependable, safety-minded, and team-oriented

Responsibilities

  • Assist in machining and assembling parts, fixtures, and prototypes for research and student projects.
  • Learn to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot manual and CNC machines.
  • Support shop organization, tool inventory, and adherence to safety standards.
  • Participate in equipment maintenance and continuous improvement of shop operations.
  • Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
