About The Position

The Assistant Manager supports all aspects of lumber yard and delivery operations, including supervising staff, maintaining inventory, assisting customers, and making deliveries as needed. This role combines leadership and hands-on responsibilities to ensure the yard operates safely, efficiently, and with a strong focus on customer satisfaction.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • 2–4 years of experience in a lumber yard, warehouse, or building materials setting.
  • Supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain).
  • Forklift operation experience required; certification referred.
  • Strong knowledge of lumber and building materials.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to safely operate delivery vehicles and handle heavy materials.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and supervising daily yard and delivery operations.
  • Load, secure, and deliver lumber and building materials to customer locations in a safe and timely manner.
  • Verify delivery tickets for accuracy and ensure materials match customer orders.
  • Maintain delivery schedules, communicate with customers, and handle delivery paperwork.
  • Ensure delivery vehicles are properly maintained, fueled, and inspected regularly.
  • Operate forklifts, trucks, and other yard equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety throughout the yard and delivery areas.
  • Provide excellent customer service, both in person and during deliveries.
  • Assist customers and contractors with product selection, loading, and order inquiries.
  • Coordinate with sales and dispatch teams to ensure accurate and timely deliveries.
  • Resolve product or delivery issues quickly and professionally.
  • Assist with receiving, stocking, and rotating inventory.
  • Conduct regular cycle counts and help maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Report inventory discrepancies, damaged goods, or shortages promptly.
  • Ensure materials are properly labeled, stacked, and protected from weather damage.
  • Supervise, train, and motivate yard and delivery staff.
  • Lead by example in safe work practices, customer service, and productivity.
  • Support scheduling, performance management, and team communication.
  • Promote and enforce company safety standards and PPE requirements.
  • Conduct regular equipment and vehicle safety checks.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company regulations.
