About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for assisting with professional nursing care for SIH patients. This role involves conducting focused nursing assessments, collaborating in the development and modification of comprehensive nursing plans of care, and implementing aspects of these plans. The LPN participates in health teaching and counseling to promote and maintain optimal patient health, serves as a patient advocate, and contributes to the evaluation of patient responses to interventions. They are also expected to communicate and collaborate with other health professionals and provide input into policy and procedure development to support patient safety. Accurate and timely documentation in patient medical records and completion of required education, competencies, and licensure are essential. Specific responsibilities vary by service line, including assisting physicians with procedures, managing equipment, and patient preparation in Perioperative services, and handling scheduling, pre-certification, data collection, and clerical duties in Cardiac Cath services. Lead LPNs may assist with scheduler roles and department management.

Requirements

  • Graduate of LPN Program
  • Current Illinois Licensed Practical Nurse license
  • CPR Certification
  • Technical Experience: N/A

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a focused nursing assessment and contribute to the ongoing comprehensive nursing assessment of the patient performed by the registered professional nurse
  • Collaborate in the development and modification of the registered professional nurse’s or advanced practice registered nurse’s comprehensive nursing plan of care for all types of patients
  • Implement aspects of the plan of care
  • Participate in health teaching and counseling to promote, attain, and maintain the optimum health level of patients
  • Serve as an advocate for the patient by communicating and collaborating with other health service personnel
  • Participate in the evaluation of patient responses to interventions
  • Communicate and collaborate with other health professionals
  • Provide input into the development of policies and procedures to support patient safety
  • Evaluates patient progress and reports changes to RN, supervisor and/or physician
  • Complete, accurate, and timely documentation in patient medical record
  • Timely completion of required education, competencies, and licensure

  • Assists with cleaning, decontaminating, sterilization and storage of equipment and instruments (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Assists in transportation and positioning of patients (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Assists in assembling and dismantling of tables and instruments before and after procedure (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Prepares patient and room for the planned surgical procedures (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Opens sterile supplies and sets up for procedures (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Completes skin preparation and draping (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Assist Surgeon with gowning and gloving (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Assist surgeon by passing instruments and suture (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Assists in maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures, and sponges (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Applies dressings and bandages as needed (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Assists in identifying, collecting, and caring for specimens (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Decontaminates instruments (point of use cleaning), supplies and equipment according to established policies and procedures; handles and stores instruments, equipment and supplies appropriately (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Aids in the efficient turnover of the operating room for next cases (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Monitors and restocks supplies (Applicable to Perioperative service line LPN’s in OR/Procedure Room)
  • Answering telephone, scheduling tests, pre-certifying and registering patients, coordinating test results, data collection and maintain data (Applicable to Cardiac Cath service line LPN’s)
  • Schedules patients for procedures (Applicable to Cardiac Cath service line LPN’s)
  • Posts case data and maintains case log (Applicable to Cardiac Cath service line LPN’s)
  • Enters patient charges (Applicable to Cardiac Cath service line LPN’s)
  • Provides pre-certification and ABN's as required (Applicable to Cardiac Cath service line LPN’s)
  • General clerical duties (Applicable to Cardiac Cath service line LPN’s)
  • Assists with all schedulers roles (Lead LPN)
  • Assists department manager as assigned and covers in their absence (Lead LPN)
