About The Position

Hackley School seeks a dynamic, highly experienced, and collaborative Lower School Music Teacher to teach general and vocal music to Grades 2 through 4. The teacher will plan and lead engaging grade-level performances, serve as a pianist for rehearsals and performances, and collaborate across curriculum and grade levels to support the needs of the Performing Arts Department. This role is ideal for an educator who is both an inspiring classroom teacher and an accomplished pianist dedicated to fostering creativity, collaboration, and a lifelong love of music in young learners. Reporting Structure The Lower School Music Teacher reports to the Director of Performing Arts and the Director of the Lower School.

Requirements

  • At least five years’ experience in education, ideally at the elementary level, as well as a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Music Education, Performance, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching general and vocal music at the elementary level.
  • Proficiency in piano accompaniment and choral direction.
  • Experience leading student ensembles (beginning tone chimes/handbells preferred).
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and direct performances.
  • Collaborative spirit and a commitment to supporting a thriving K–12 performing arts program.
  • A passion for working with young learners in an engaging, supportive, and creative environment.

Nice To Haves

  • A working knowledge of music notation software is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teach general and vocal music to grades 2, 3 and 4, incorporating developmentally appropriate curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Direct and instruct grades 3 and 4 tone chime ensembles.
  • Plan, rehearse, and direct grade-level and Lower School divisional performances in collaboration with homeroom teachers.
  • Provide piano accompaniment for classes, rehearsals, and performances.
  • Set up technology for Lower School Assemblies.
  • Collaborate with and support Lower School teachers on curriculum development and progression.
  • Maintain clear communication with families, colleagues, and administrators regarding student progress and performance schedules.
  • Lead the after-school 3rd and 4th grade choral group, The Hack-Glee Club.
  • Contribute to the life of the K-12 school community through participation in faculty meetings, duties, professional development, and school events.
