About The Position

At Hammond Lower School, we believe every child deserves success, growth, and belonging in the regular classroom setting. The Developmental Enrichment Center (DEC) exists to support students in becoming confident, capable, and independently successful learners within the regular Hammond classroom setting. Hammond seeks a dynamic, caring, and innovative Literacy Interventionist & Instructional Coach who embraces this mission and is committed to supporting students and homeroom teachers towards achieving it. This educator will play a vital role in partnering with students and faculty to ensure literacy instruction is aligned, responsive, and differentiated to meet individual needs. Through targeted intervention, instructional coaching, and collaboration with grade-level teams, this position strengthens both student independence and the coherence of Lower School literacy instruction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, Reading, Special Education, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in literacy instruction and intervention at the elementary level.
  • Strong understanding of differentiated instruction and responsive classroom practices.
  • Experience using assessment data to inform instruction and monitor student progress.
  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to fostering student confidence, independence, and academic growth.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Reading, Literacy, Special Education, or related field.
  • Training and/or certification in evidence-based reading intervention approaches (Orton-Gillingham).
  • Experience in an independent school setting.
  • Experience coaching or modeling instructional practices for faculty.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development in reading science and literacy best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized and small-group literacy intervention designed to equip students with the strategies and skills necessary for independent success in their Hammond classrooms.
  • Support students in the DEC as they complete assignments or assessments in alignment with their learning profiles, fostering confidence, ownership, and academic independence.
  • Use benchmark assessments and ongoing progress monitoring to inform instruction and measure student growth in reading and writing.
  • Maintain organized, confidential records of assessments and intervention data accessible to the DEC Coordinator, Lower School Administration, and teachers as appropriate.
  • Partner with the DEC Coordinator and Admissions in the academic screening process as needed.
  • Work regularly and proactively with each grade-level team to ensure literacy instruction is aligned, cohesive, and differentiated to meet individual student needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers to design and implement classroom strategies, accommodations, and instructional supports that allow students to succeed within the core Hammond curriculum.
  • Observe, model lessons, co-teach, and guest teach to strengthen instructional practices and promote best practices in literacy instruction.
  • Curate and organize DEC literacy resources, including leveled texts and intervention materials, to support classroom differentiation and responsive instruction.
  • Support classroom instruction for students who would benefit from enriched or accelerated experiences in ELA
  • Maintain consistent, positive communication with faculty, staff, and parents regarding student progress and instructional support.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training in evidence-based reading intervention strategies and literacy best practices.
  • Maintain an organized, welcoming DEC space that reflects the school's commitment to joyful and purposeful learning.
  • Contribute to a culture of collaboration, respect, and continuous growth within the Lower School.
  • Serve as the point of contact for English Language Arts subscriptions and curricular materials from outside vendors and consultants.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Lower School Administration.
