About The Position

Friends’ Central School Overview Friends’ Central School is an independent, coeducational Quaker day school founded in 1845 and serving approximately 880 students in Nursery through grade 12. Located in the Philadelphia suburbs, the School has two campuses. The Middle & Upper Schools are located just outside of West Philadelphia in Wynnewood, and the Lower School is on our Old Gulph Road campus in the heart of Wynnewood. Lower School Learning and Enrichment Specialist Friends’ Central School seeks a full-time Lower School Learning and Enrichment Specialist for August 2026. The ideal candidate will have significant experience working with Lower School students and families in grades Nursery through 5th. They will also possess comprehensive knowledge of inclusive teaching practices, particularly regarding neurodiversity, exceptionalities, and the development of young learners. Beyond having extensive knowledge, a successful candidate will also be adept at supporting students who need remediation, those who need enrichment, and those with executive functioning needs. They will be in a collaborative role with classroom teachers and other specialists, requiring them to be creative, adaptable, and flexible. They will also serve as the coordinator of services for students, the point person for scheduling, and the liaison between the school house and outside professionals and experts. This 10-month position reports to the Lower School Principal and the Director of Student Services. The Lower School Learning and Enrichment Specialist will meet regularly with Lower School administrators and is a member of the Lower School Student Services Team. The Lower School Learning and Enrichment Specialist primarily provides individual instructional support to Lower School students as appropriate and serves as a resource for students, faculty, and families.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Education, Literacy, Special Education, School Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or Educational Therapy.
  • 3–6 years of full-time experience with elementary-aged students, preferably in a school-based setting.
  • Deep understanding of early childhood development, neurodiversity-informed instructional practices, and culturally responsive teaching.
  • Strong knowledge of elementary literacy and/or math curricula and assessment tools.
  • Experience with teacher consultation, instructional coaching, or collaborative problem-solving teams.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and interpersonal).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Fundations, Fountas & Pinnell, Units of Study, Context for Learning Math, or similar programs.
  • Ongoing, updated training in the science of reading.
  • Understanding of sensory, motor, and social-emotional factors that impact learning.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and maintain confidentiality with discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Direct Student Support Have a comprehensive understanding of student needs in the Lower School, including academic enrichment and remediation, as well as early childhood development.
  • Support students with executive functioning challenges in developing habits and learning strategies for academic success.
  • Provide direct instruction (including small groups) to students identified in partnership with classroom teachers and the Director of Literacy and Learning Design.
  • Collaboration, Coaching, and Teacher Support Coordinate services for student success, including external support from providers such as occupational therapists, speech therapists, tutors, and psychologists.
  • Work closely with our Director of Literacy and Learning Design to ensure comprehensive support of students in grades Nursery through 5th grade.
  • Participate in Student Services Team meetings, collaborating to ensure continued attention to the changing needs of individual students and accountability in the use of effective strategies.
  • Assessment, Data, and Curriculum Oversee fidelity to our math curriculum (Context for Learning Math) to ensure teachers have up-to-date training and are on target with our scope and sequence.
  • Maintain clear communication and sufficient documentation regarding student learning support and progress (attendance, caregiver communication, and collaboration with colleagues).
  • Read and interpret educational/psychological reports and maintain and update student records (Educational Plans).
  • Have expertise in reviewing and interpreting data – including but not limited to reading assessments, standardized testing, and psychoeducational evaluations – to determine student needs and appropriate interventions.
  • Community & School Responsibilities Assist with professional development and training for faculty by providing them with the additional support needed to implement various instructional programs and practices.
  • Attend Lower School faculty meetings, in-service days, and professional development/training offerings.
  • Support other aspects of school and community life - such as serving on a Lower School committee, supervising lunch duties, and other duties as assigned.
