About The Position

The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as Lower School Head Teacher. All candidates are encouraged to be familiar with Chapin’s website, mission and commitment to DEIB. The Lower School Head Teacher will be a lead teacher who demonstrates a commitment to innovation, reflective practice, and interdisciplinary curriculum development. They will also be a student-centered educator who values each student’s voice, experience, and history, and an educator who recognizes the importance of social-emotional learning and actively cultivates a classroom and community of belonging. Furthermore, the teacher will be a partner to students, their parents, and colleagues in teaching and learning, enthusiastically approaching their work and demonstrating strong organizational skills, flexibility, and follow-through on assignments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum two years of Lead Teaching Experience in an elementary classroom

  • Commitment to Culturally Responsive Practices and fostering a Community of Belonging
  • Experience working with an inquiry-based math program, a robust literacy program, and an integrated social studies curriculum
  • Bilingual English/Spanish speakers are of particular interest, as our students learn Spanish starting in Kindergarten
  • Proficiency with digital tools such as Seesaw, Canvas, and the Google Suite for Education

Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to prepare, implement, and document appropriate lesson plans in Social Studies, Literacy, and Math that meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students
  • Facilitates high-quality, engaging learning experiences built around intellectual exploration and joyful discovery
  • Uses diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment data to inform teaching and learning and set individual student goals
  • Actively engages in professional growth by seeking feedback, reflecting on teaching practices, and pursuing opportunities for continued learning and development
  • Understands and appreciates the Lower School learner within the context of early childhood development
  • Demonstrates effective pedagogy by employing research-based, differentiated strategies that support diverse student backgrounds, learning needs, interests and well-being
  • Fostering an inclusive classroom that promotes diverse points of view and constructive dialogue through a commitment to inclusion, and belonging
  • Designing and maintaining a joyful, productive, and consistent learning environment, building relationships with students while recognizing the hands-on nature of childhood learning
  • Works collaboratively and generously with colleagues on the grade team and across the Lower School
  • Seeks opportunities to work with co-curricular teachers on interdisciplinary units of study that allow students to draw meaningful connections across subjects
  • Serves as a supportive mentor when working with an Associate Teacher
  • Builds strong partnerships with families and communicates both formally and informally about curriculum, school life, and each child’s personal journey
  • Enthusiastically approaches their work and demonstrates strong organizational skills, flexibility, and follow-through on assignments
