About The Position

The Long-Term Substitute will take on all aspects of a Lower School Teacher (Grade levels 5-6) as indicated from the job description, including lesson planning. Groves has a highly specialized program with many supports in place for substitutes. We encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every requirement or qualification of the job. The Lower School Teacher position is responsible for fostering a nurturing, engaging, and inclusive learning environment for all students. Using the academy's mission and vision to guide their work, the Lower School Teacher will create lesson plans, provide instruction, and structure learning environments based on research, best practices, and data supporting students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. This position is an integral part of the Lower School team and needs to be able to foster and support a collaborative environment, as well as communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and families.

Requirements

  • A BA/BS degree in education is required

  • Able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words, written material, multimedia, and audiovisual sources.
  • Understand and maintain the confidential nature of student, organization, and employee information, in accordance with HIPAA regulations
  • Hear, speak, and effectively verbally communicate in the English language, including following oral and written instructions, in order to communicate with people inside and outside the organization.
  • Sit at a desk for extended periods of time and perform long hours of work sitting at a computer and in meetings.
  • Stand or sit for extended periods of time and perform long hours of work teaching in the classroom.
  • Apply manual dexterity and visual acuity for computer keyboarding and office equipment use, and review detailed reports and information.
  • Move around the school and office area repeatedly throughout the day.

Nice To Haves

  • Training in Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Language Programs preferred
  • Experience teaching in the area of LD/ADHD is highly preferred
  • An intuitive teaching ability and the adaptability to serve students with diverse needs
  • Training and Licensure in Special Education are desirable

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding children as a priority.
  • Delivering research-based, individualized teaching for each student focused on outcomes.
  • Utilizing Orton-Gillingham and Wilson Language Programs.
  • Planning and preparing learning activities for a balanced program of instruction and demonstration.
  • Providing an environment and culture in the classroom that engages students and helps them learn more effectively.
  • Implementing key components of a Groves Academy education, such as strong relationship development with students, knowledge of the student learning profiles, evidence-based decision-making, and differentiation.
  • Designing and adapting instruction to meet a range of student learning needs and interests, encouraging students' creative expression, incorporating student interests and passions, and developing critical thinking skills.
  • Communicating with parents on a regular basis by email or phone, conferences, and progress report writing.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Upholding the Characteristics of Teacher Excellence at Groves Academy.
  • Provides information to supervisors, co-workers, and parents by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Attends annual training sessions as required.
  • Performs miscellaneous projects and completes various tasks as requested by Division Directors and/or the Vice President of Learning/Head of school.
