About The Position

To identify appropriate supports and accommodations for students with disabilities; to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) with IEP Teams; to serve as Case Manager for students with identified special needs; to implement appropriate instructional interventions for students; to collaborate with general education colleagues.

Requirements

  • Valid R.I. certification as Special Educator
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the federal and state regulations governing special education
  • Masters Degree or other advanced degree
  • Knowledge of sensory integration strategies
  • Experience supporting students in inclusive school settings
  • Experience serving as a member of a team
  • Experience in supporting/remediating students’ needs in mathematics, reading and phonological-based skills

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and exposes them to general education curricula.
  • Create a learning environment that is conducive to learning and that addresses students’ needs through age-appropriate means.
  • Implement instructional methods and materials appropriate to meet individual student’s needs.
  • Work with a team to develop measurable and observable educational/behavioral goals and objectives within IEPs that meet the individual needs/abilities of students and adhere to the District’s standards and procedures.
  • Assess students regularly and routinely to document their progress and communicate the results to parents and other teachers.
  • Serve as Case Manager for students with current IEPs, as assigned.
  • Support and consult with colleagues, parents and students regarding supports, interventions and outcomes.
  • Support students in their interactions with their typically developing peers.
  • Utilize appropriate reevaluation instruments as determined by the District for student reevaluation and make accurate determination of individual current students’ performance, needs, strengths and continued eligibility for special services.
  • Submit typed comprehensive reevaluation reports citing educational tests administered with the results and interpretations of those results.
  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development, for keeping current with the literature, new research findings, improved strategies and instructional techniques and for attending appropriate professional meetings and conferences.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Support District implementation of all policies governing special education, civil rights and education in general.
  • Attendance is an essential function of all BWRSD positions.
  • Assume other duties and assignments that may be made from time to time by the Director of Student Support Services or Building Principal.
