The Maine Woods Initiative (MWI) is AMC’s approach to land conservation in the 100 Mile Wilderness. This model combines outdoor recreation, resource protection, sustainable forestry, and community partnerships. AMC has conserved over 114,000 acres of forestland, developed more than 120 miles of trails, and operates three lodges that support both guest experiences and conservation outcomes. The Gorman Lodge Manager is responsible for delivering full service guest experiences year round, including winter, summer, and fall operations, as well as managing shoulder season transitions from November to December and March to April. This position lives on site as needed and serves as the primary resident host and leader of lodge operations, staff, and overall guest experience in a remote setting.

Requirements

  • Experienced, hands on leader with a background in hospitality, lodge management, or a related field
  • Comfortable living and working in a remote, backcountry environment
  • Strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to motivate and lead a team
  • Ability to manage a wide range of responsibilities, from guest engagement to facility operations
  • Physically capable of performing required work, traveling in all weather conditions, and navigating remote terrain
  • Experience with outdoor recreation and comfort learning or using reservation systems, POS systems, and Microsoft 365 tools
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a snowmobile in winter conditions
  • Strong alignment with AMC’s mission and a passion for creating meaningful outdoor experiences for guests

Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of lodge operations, including hiring, training, supervising, and supporting staff while fostering a collaborative, high performing team culture
  • Deliver welcoming, attentive, and consistent full service guest experiences across all seasons
  • Oversee daily operations for lodging, dining services, housekeeping, facilities, and grounds
  • Ensure high quality meal service within budget while maintaining AMC standards
  • Maintain safe, efficient operation of buildings, off grid systems, and infrastructure
  • Uphold AMC standards across the main lodge and any satellite guest accommodations
  • Manage off grid systems, including heat and power
  • Support AMC programs, guest activities, and special events such as weddings and company retreats
  • Plan and execute seasonal opening and closing procedures
  • Provide on call coverage to support guest needs and operational issues
