Requirements

  • Key cutting, master keying, maintaining proper documentation; installing and removing cylinders
  • 5 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3–5 years of professional locksmith experience, preferably in a commercial or institutional setting.
  • Strong knowledge of master key systems, cylinders, and commercial door hardware.
  • Ability to read and interpret keying charts, hardware schedules, and construction plans.
  • Valid NYC locksmith license
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work on ladders, lifts, and in mechanical spaces.

Nice To Haves

  • 10 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE PREFERRED
  • Experience working in a hospital, university, or similar multi building environment.
  • Experience with life safety door hardware (delayed egress, fire rated doors, ligature resistant hardware).
  • Certification(s) such as ALOA, CPL, CIL, or institutional locksmith training.
  • Knowledge of electronic key organizing system such as SimpleK Key
  • CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE PREFERRED Certifications related to position
  • SKILLS PREFERRED Knowledge of Corbin Russwin and Medeco systems

Responsibilities

  • Locksmithing & Hardware Maintenance
  • Install, repair, adjust, and maintain locks, door hardware, hinges, closers, panic bars, and other mechanical security devices.
  • Re-key cylinders, generate new keys, and maintain keyway integrity for restricted and proprietary systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on doors and mechanical access hardware in high traffic clinical areas.
  • Manage the hospital’s master key system, including creation, documentation, distribution, and secure storage of keys and cores.
  • Maintain strict chain of custody protocols for controlled keys (e.g., narcotics vaults, pharmacy areas, IT closets).
  • Track keys issued to staff, vendors, contractors, and emergency personnel in coordination with Security.
  • Coordinate with the electronic security team on integration between physical locks and electronic access control systems.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, Joint Commission requirements, NFPA life safety codes, and HIPAA related physical security standards.
  • Support safety inspections and regulatory audits by providing documentation, hardware updates, and corrective actions.
  • Emergency Response
  • Respond promptly to lockouts, broken hardware, or urgent door security issues that pose a safety or operational risk.
  • Participate in after hours on call rotations (if applicable) for emergency security needs.
  • Documentation & Inventory
  • Maintain accurate records of keys issued, lock changes, master system updates, and work performed.
  • Manage inventory of locks, cylinders, cores, keys, and specialized tools.
  • Recommend hardware upgrades to improve security, reliability, and ADA compliance.
  • Collaboration & Customer Service
  • Work with clinical departments to support their unique security needs (e.g., pediatric units, restricted medication areas).
  • Provide guidance to staff on proper use of door hardware and security procedures.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors on hardware installations and major security upgrades.
