About The Position

Northwestern State University seeks qualified applicants for the position of Locksmith. This person in this position is responsible for providing comprehensive lock, key, and security hardware services across all facilities. This employee reports to the Director of Operations. The Locksmith ensures all campus buildings remain safe, secure, and accessible through the installation, maintenance, and repair of locks, doors, closures, panic devices, and related systems. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certifications in locksmithing preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of locksmithing practices, tools, and techniques.
  • Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of locks, key systems, closures, panic devices, and security hardware.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage inventory and maintain accurate records.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Registered or Certified Locksmith (RL, CRL, or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of electronic access systems and integration with mechanical hardware.
  • Experience working in institutional settings such as universities, hospitals, or government facilities.
  • Familiarity with ADA, NFPA, and other applicable building codes.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary locksmith resource for the university, managing all aspects of locksmith services and access control.
  • Install, repair, and maintain locks, door hardware, electronic access devices, and related systems to support campus security.
  • Perform maintenance and preventative maintenance on all doors, door closures, hinges, panic devices, and hardware, including all preparations required for the installation of locks.
  • Cut, duplicate, rekey, and issue keys in accordance with a secure key control system.
  • Design, implement, and maintain master keying systems to ensure efficient and secure access across campus facilities.
  • Respond promptly to work orders, service calls, and emergency lockouts.
  • Inspect and evaluate door and hardware conditions, making necessary adjustments, replacements, or upgrades.
  • Maintain accurate records of keys issued, locks changed, and work performed.
  • Monitor and order supplies, parts, and materials while maintaining an organized shop and inventory.
  • Serve as the point of contact with outside vendors and contractors for specialized locksmith or security projects.
  • Ensure compliance with ADA standards, fire codes, and institutional security policies.
  • Stay current with new technologies and best practices in lock and security systems.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Director of Operations.
