Purpose Perform journey-level locksmithing work including installation, maintenance, inspection, and servicing of locking systems and keys on all types of doors and equipment at The University of Texas at Austin, JJ Pickle Research campuses, and other University-owned locations.

  • Install, service, inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain various mechanical and electronic lock types while working independently or as part of a team.
  • Perform rekey services, including key origination, lock cylinder pinning, and installation as requested by departments while closely adhering to key security policies and hardware standards.
  • Cut keys by code and duplicate keys using various types of key-cutting machinery.
  • Stamp, engrave, and file keys to ensure the safety and security of campus keys and locks.
  • Maintain records of key recipients and respective key codes.
  • Track and update the status of all work orders in the electronic work order system (UT Works), ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Maintain professionalism in interactions with UT personnel, students, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Keep supervisor, customer, and other involved project contacts up to date on work order status by providing clear, concise, and necessary communication by email, phone, and in-person conversations.
  • Assist with acquiring necessary project materials and managing project inventory.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.
  • Interpret and work from drawings and specifications for assigned projects and comply with all applicable codes, regulations, and standards.
  • Grant access to areas during emergency and routine situations by picking locks, when necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working area.
  • Monitor and service machinery and tools for safe operation and work efficiency.
  • Conduct audits of inventory levels and advise supervisor of needs.
  • Attend and participate in crew and department meetings.
  • Drive University-owned vehicles.
  • Complete all required departmental trainings.
  • Other related duties as assigned, including working with other departments.
  • Occasional overtime is required to support organizational goals and objectives.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • At least 3 years of field experience as a working locksmith with a strong customer service background.
  • Must have strong attention to detail with problem-solving abilities.
  • Required to possess and maintain a valid Class "C" Texas driver's license. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas driver's license within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
  • Possess basic computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Provide a stable work history demonstrating the ability and willingness to follow direction.
  • Must respond to after-hours requests as part of the on-call, departmental response time is one hour.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • Trade school or college with more than 3 years of field experience as a working locksmith.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills.
  • Experience with government projects.
  • Knowledge of construction drawings.
