About The Position

The locksmith, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion installing, adjusting, maintaining, repairing, and replacing all types of locks and integrated security systems, access control devises, and other types of lock hardware such as latches, door checks, and panic bars. Position is also responsible for changing lock combinations and making keys. Employee performs district-level work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of a supervisor of maintenance operation. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Requirements

  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the trade of locksmith
  • Knowledge of the variety of locks available and the best use for each type of lock
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Ability to learn industry specific knowledge such as Sargent, Schlage, Corbin Russwin, Von Duprin, Adams Rite, Precision, Detex, LCN, American Padlocks, Securitron, Yale, Best Trilogy Locks, Dor-O-Matic, Dorma, and Monarch
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to safely operate hand and power tools and equipment used in the locksmithing trade
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to keep required records and documentation
  • Ability to perform skilled work involving installing, repairing and replacing locks
  • Ability to work effectively in the absence of supervision
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of locksmith or related work experience required

  • Specialized locksmith training preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Adjust, maintain, repair, and replace door locks, padlocks, tumbler locks, combination locks, and various other lock hardware such as panic bars, door checks, latches, catches, fasteners, and door closures
  • Design master key systems which include sub-master and single keys. Maintains records
  • Review key schedules and blueprints to assist with new construction projects
  • Open and repair jammed and vandalized locks. Respond to emergency situations that may involve opening a jammed lock or repairs on locks to secure outside doors
  • Train school personnel and administrators on repair techniques and use of key filing system
  • Document work order requests with appropriate information regarding time, materials and resolution
  • Perform related work as assigned or required
