About The Position

Incumbents in this position are responsible for highly skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of new and existing lock systems in the City's Justice Center. Examples of duties include: installing, maintaining and repairing cylinder locks and bit key locks; ordering and maintaining an inventory stock of spare parts for all locking systems, and working closely with Justice Center staff to meet their needs while following policies and procedures for key, tool, and equipment control.

Requirements

  • Associated Locksmith of America (ALOA) membership and certification as a Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL), plus one year of locksmith and mechanical maintenance experience

Responsibilities

  • Installs, cleans, and repairs institutional locks.
  • Repairs institutional doors and chuckholes.
  • Maintains key control systems to ensure accountability and security of all facility keys.
  • Responds to security emergencies involving locks, doors, or gates to restore them to proper function.
  • Ensures all security hardware meets institutional safety and compliance standards.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains cylinder locks and bit key locks; makes or cuts keys for locks.
  • Maintains records regarding lock and key locations.
  • Maintains security for duplicate keys.
  • Installs and repairs door hardware, panic bars, hinges, closers and other hardware.
  • Installs and repairs cabinet, desk and other locks.
  • Checks security badges.
  • Orders and stocks locksmith parts and supplies.
  • May train others regarding basic lock repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and/or reference data, statutes and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.
  • Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as coworkers, on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as code cutting machine, key cutting machine, a variety of hand tools, computer terminal, motor vehicle and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, blueprints, key requests/transfers, work orders, security badge reports, issued key reports, vehicle inspection reports, time sheets, lock specifications, computer software operating manuals and security regulations.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentage and decimals.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as, temperature and noise extremes, machinery and vibrations.
  • Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to lift, push and pull objects weighing over one hundred pounds to install doors, loading and unload parts. Requires the ability to stoop, crouch, bend, twist, climb and balance to install doors, locks and related equipment.
  • Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of colors to determine codes on color-coded locks, shapes to distinguish objects clearly, sounds to respond to alarms and communicate with others, and textures to determine if surfaces need to be sanded.
