About The Position

The Local Government Services (LGS) Intern is a temporary, entry-level position designed to provide practical experience in governmental advisory and audit-related services. Under close supervision, the intern supports project teams by performing foundational research, data collection, documentation, and administrative tasks. This position offers exposure to local government operations, governmental accounting standards, internal controls, and legislative processes while developing professional skills in analysis, communication, and public service accountability.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in, or recent completion of, a baccalaureate degree in accounting, public administration, finance, economics, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills appropriate for an entry-level role.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
  • Demonstrated interest in government operations, accountability, and public service.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; ability to learn new software and internal systems quickly.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in governmental accounting, auditing, public finance, or internal controls is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develops foundational knowledge of local government operations, laws, and internal control concepts.
  • Develops introductory understanding of governmental accounting and auditing standards (e.g., GASB, AICPA) and nonprofit accounting standards (e.g., FASB).
  • Demonstrates initiative in learning research methods, analytical techniques, and organizational practices.
  • Learns and applies LGS project protocols, forms, and tools.
  • Utilizes computer hardware and software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, and internal systems) to support project needs.
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail and ability to organize and maintain documentation accurately.
  • Assist with collecting, organizing, and summarizing data for advisory projects.
  • Support drafting and updating basic internal control documentation and related workpapers.
  • Conduct basic research using LLA guidance, statutes, regulations, and publicly available records.
  • Assist with report formatting, compilation, and quality review for accuracy and completeness.
  • Participate in training sessions, project meetings, and team discussions.
  • Assist with legislative requests, fiscal note support, and background research as directed.
  • Provide support in gathering and analyzing information related to water rate and sewer studies.
  • Assist in reviewing CPA reports or extension requests, as assigned.
  • Help respond to routine inquiries from local government officials or CPAs, referring complex or sensitive matters to supervisors.
  • Support work related to LLA and legislative initiatives, including statewide agreed-upon procedures and uniform reporting projects, as directed.
  • Perform administrative and project-tracking tasks as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
