About The Position

As a Livestock Research Technologist, you will carry out routine, hands-on animal care and facility maintenance in alignment with established care standards and research protocols for dairy cattle (all life stages) and dairy × beef cattle (all life stages). Your responsibilities will include feeding, monitoring animal health, and assisting with research and operational projects. You will manage feed and supply inventory, evaluate supplies, and purchase research-specific feeds as needed. In addition, you will support the principal investigator (PI) in training students on feeding and animal care procedures. You will also collect, prepare, and ship feed and research samples, as well as assist with in vitro fermentation experiments, including inoculum preparation, proximate nutrient analysis, volatile fatty acid quantification, and gas composition characterization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the applied, biological, chemical, physical or agricultural sciences; OR four years of full-time experience as a Technical Farm Laborer, OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Prior husbandry experience with livestock and working with animals.
  • Experience safely and efficiently operating and maintaining small scale farm equipment.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
  • Must be able to work a rotating schedule that could include weekends, after hours, and holidays as needed and directed by supervisor.
  • This is an essential position, and the employee will be expected to report to work under conditions that other employees are not required to report to work during, such as inclement weather and during WSU suspended operations.
