About The Position

Litigation Counsel is responsible for providing designated legal services to the healthcare system. The role involves representing health system entities and providers as assistant counsel of record in general litigation, including but not limited to specialized healthcare litigation, professional liability defense, employment matters, premises liability, collections litigation, general liability, and unemployment issues. Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
• Admission and good standing with the Bar of Pennsylvania.
• At least 7 years of legal experience, including clerkship, law firm and/or in-house roles.
• Able to communicate effectively with employees at all levels, including executive leadership.

Responsibilities

• Serve as assistant counsel in trial, arbitration, and alternative dispute resolution forums for assigned cases.
• Assist in managing outside counsel in litigation.
• Collaborate with outside counsel on monitoring and litigation strategy, expert selection, and provide guidance on internal claims review procedures.
• Support management of financially significant and complex claims and litigation through resolution.
• Collaborate to set and update reserves as required.
• Assist in coordination and communication with insurance carriers, including state insurance funds.
• Review invoices from outside law firms for cost-effective case management and compliance with system policies.
• Evaluate, analyze, and synthesize various clinical, financial, and operational claim data to develop assessments and recommendations.
• Assist in the presentation of case evaluations to the Professional Liability Claims Review Committee with recommendations for disposition of assigned cases and claims.
• Assist in preparing and presenting educational programs to clinical and operational departments on litigation and risk management topics.
• Provide expertise on litigation across the system, maintaining broad knowledge of healthcare and claims management practices, including credentialing and human resources.
• Comply with the Legal Service Department’s Standards of Professional Conduct and Performance as implemented by the Department.
• Deliver general legal services, including preparation, review, and revision of legal documents; provide oral and written opinions; create, review, and revise organizational guidelines, policies, and procedures; participate in conference calls and meetings; and serve on committees as designated.
