About The Position

The South Shore YMCA Day Camps are a place where campers aged 3-15 come to enjoy a wide range of summer adventures. Camp is a unique place where we have the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of many youth. Along with the fun that camp provides comes great responsibility, long hot days with many different challenges. In addition to practical experience and training, you must have a strong desire to work with youth. Working with us requires you to be a positive role model for youth and a compassionate leader amongst campers and staff at all times. LIT COORDINATOR: Applicants must be at least 20 years old. The LIT Coordinator is responsible for supervising up to 10 campers ages 13-15. They are responsible for planning and facilitating leadership activities for their group. The LIT Coordinator is responsible for supervising LITs as they support groups and lead their own activities. They will also be responsible for coordinating where their LIT Camper goes for grouping. Experience and/or certifications in the various specialty camp areas may be required or may greatly further the application.

  • The South Shore YMCA Nature Adventures Camp operates Monday through Friday between June 17 to August 23, 2024. Successful applicants are expected to be available for the full camp season.
  • The ability to develop positive, effective working relationships with staff, children & families, volunteers, school administrators, members, community leaders and other agencies are critical to this position.
  • Effective management skills, the ability to implement methods to address and follow up with family needs/concerns in a positive and professional way reflecting an attitude that values diversity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with school age children is preferred (LIT Coordinator Counselors work with campers aged 13-15 years old)

Responsibilities

  • Facilitating day to day camp activities; including, but not limited to helping children adjust to the camp setting by providing personal and social-emotional support, facilitating nature and science based activities, supervising eating times, playing games, singing songs, etc.
  • Attend camp meetings and pre-season training as required.
  • Work individually and with fellow camp staff to plan and lead nature-related activities that are factually accurate, age-appropriate, engaging and fun.
  • Lead Counselors and LIT Coordinators: Submit written lesson plans and supplies lists for each session.
  • Adhere to basic safety principles as outlined in pre-season training.
  • Provide parents with clear communication about their children’s activities.
  • Maintain a camp area and any space used by your group is kept clean and hazard free
  • Participation in weekly staff meetings.
  • Creating and Implementing LIT (Leadership in Training) training and activities.
  • Coordinating LIT Camper group placements during experiential week of two week session.
  • Assist in planning and execution of programs to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives.
  • Responsible for assisting in the compliance in all related areas including the Department of Early Education & Care (EEC) licensing procedures and regulations, assist in working towards increased Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS) levels as determined by SACC goals and promoting YUSA Healthy Eating Physical Activity (HEPA) standards.
  • Provide reasonable accommodations to allow children with disabilities to participate in activities whenever possible and to meet each child’s individual needs according to EEC and ADA.
  • Assist in supervision of program participants in accordance with the organization's policies, EEC regulations, applicable laws and QRIS Standards.
  • Monitor and communicate with Camp Directors, all staff related EEC, QRIS, and South Shore YMCA requirements.
  • Builds relationships with and among families and members, assists in responding to inquiries and solves problems.
  • Creates a supportive community environment, assists in recruiting and engaging new families, and connects families to the YMCA’s cause.
  • Works with the Camp Directors and other Camp Staff members to ensure that program facilities and equipment for children are safe, clean, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive.
  • Responsible for assisting to engage and work with volunteers.
  • Assists in YMCA fundraising activities/events, and engages in collaborative relationships with community organizations in order to strengthen support and build community.
