About The Position

The Line Technician position involves performing duties to independently carry out all line crew activities, including construction, operation, and maintenance of the Cooperative's electrical distribution system and signal circuits. The role requires continuous refresher and new skill training, while also providing instruction and guidance to Line Technician Apprentice and Second Class Line Technician levels. The hiring level (First Class, Second Class, or Apprentice) is determined based on an evaluation of experience.

Requirements

  • 5-7 years of experience for First Class Line Technician.
  • 3-4 years of experience for Second Class Line Technician.
  • 2-3 years of experience for Apprentice Line Technician III.
  • 1 year of experience for Apprentice Line Technician II.
  • Current American Red Cross Standard First Aid certification.
  • Current Adult CPR certification.
  • Valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.
  • DOT certification.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations, federal motor carrier regulations, and state DOT/Public Service Commission regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret RUS specifications and line construction assemblies, and NEC and National Electric Safety codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret the Cooperative's electrical and mechanical tagging and other numbering systems, SCADA information, and the layout, feeds, and delivery points of electrical transmission and distribution lines.

Responsibilities

  • Independently performs all types of underground/overhead line duties under direction of the Line Supervisor.
  • Trains and coordinates work of other technicians.
  • Works on hot line distribution circuits on all lines and voltages of the Cooperative, following established procedures and safe practices.
  • Performs duties involving the construction, operation, and maintenance of the Cooperative's electrical distribution system and signal circuits.
  • Makes all types of single and polyphase transformer installations, rephasing and phase rotation on polyphase circuits.
  • Installs, removes and relocates transformers, lighting, secondaries, service drops, oil circuit breakers, poles, conductors, capacitors, regulators, and other line equipment.
  • Installs or removes instrument transformers, recording or indicating meters of all types.
  • Makes load and voltage tests.
  • Performs staking and line layout duties as assigned.
  • Reads, interprets, and changes, as needed, staking sheets.
  • Develops material list from the staking sheets.
  • Reads and interprets RUS specifications and line construction assemblies, and NEC and National Electric Safety codes.
  • Reads and interprets the Cooperative's electrical and mechanical tagging and other numbering systems, SCADA information, and the layout, feeds, and delivery points of electrical transmission and distribution lines.
  • Follows standard procedures to check materials in and out of the warehouse.
  • Follows safety standards and ensures that other crew members are aware of and are following safety rules and procedures.
  • Knows and complies with the Cooperative's safety regulations and ensures compliance among crewmembers.
  • Maintains current American Red Cross Standard First Aid and Adult CPR certifications.
  • Knows and complies with traffic laws and regulations, federal motor carrier regulations, and state DOT/Public Service Commission regulations.
  • Ensures that assigned trucks and equipment are operated safely in accordance with government and the Cooperative's safety rules and regulations.
  • Ensures that assigned vehicles, tools and equipment are in good, safe working condition and properly maintained.
  • Promptly reports any vehicle, tool or equipment that needs repair to the immediate supervisor.
  • Uses radio equipment for communications in the correct manner according to regulations.
  • Maintains a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license and DOT certification.
  • Detects faulty operations or materials and reports all unusual conditions to supervisor.
  • Is available to respond to all types of emergency service calls.
  • Follows safety procedures and keeps work area clean and orderly.
  • Performs other similar or related duties as assigned.
