About The Position

The Shawnee YMCA Lifeguard creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area. Must acquire all required certifications prior to being scheduled to work as a lifeguard Must remain vigilant and ready to enter the water and render CPR, and first aid with little to no preparation while on duty. Must maintain valid certifications by completing all required annual courses. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model; completes related reports as required. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action. Respond to member inquiries or concerns. Ensure pool is available to members on time Attend events as needed Follows YMCA policies and procedures per the employee handbook; responds to emergency situations. Has knowledge of all aquatics equipment and is able to assist members when needed Conducts, or oversees, one-on-one swim lessons, for additional fee Performs equipment inspections, reports any unsafe condition to supervisor Immediately report abuse, harassment, or “red-flag” occurrences, by any person or to any person, on YMCA property or attending a YMCA event. Attend and work events as needed. Perform all other duties as directed by the Director of Aquatics.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must be certified, or able to become certified, in all CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard courses required for the position.
  • Blood borne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention training required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must possess skills, physical ability, and knowledge required to successfully manage the above scope of duties.
  • Must have sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions.
  • Must possess an appropriate level of swimming skill to perform all tasks.
  • Must be physically able to pass and hold all lifeguard, first aid, and other required certifications to fill the position.
