About The Position

The Life Skill Coach creates opportunities for and provides functional social and behavioral skills training to adults with developmental disabilities in a variety of community integrated settings. This role involves implementing client Individual Service Plans and Behavior Support Plans, participating in client assessments, and maintaining timely records. The coach provides care and supervision, supporting clients in skill training activities including behavioral/social skills, community resources, independent living, and vocational skills. They also assist with personal care activities and personal devices, and may drive clients to various community locations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum of six months related experience working with individuals with developmental/behavioral disabilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients, customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Current CPR and first aid certificates.
  • Certification of TB clearance.
  • Physical exam.
  • Fingerprint clearance.
  • Class B California Driver's License may be required.
  • Ability to provide a positive environment that stimulates learning skills and maintenance.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to follow directions and written behavior plans.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent change.
  • Ability to prioritize work effectively to meet a variety of timelines.

Nice To Haves

  • College level course work in social welfare, special education, psychology, rehabilitation, or other related field may be partial substitute for paid work experience.
  • Behavior management background preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implements client comprehensive Individual Service Plans under the direction of the Service Coordinator.
  • Implements individual client Behavior Support plans under the direction of the Resource Specialist.
  • Participates in client assessments and ongoing evaluation of client Individual Service Plan Objectives and Behavior Support Plans.
  • Keeps timely records (daily tracking, case notes, etc.) of targeted tasks and behaviors for Individual Service Plans and Behavior Support Plans.
  • Provides care and supervision while supporting clients in skills training activities relating to individuals and groups in community integrated settings.
  • Provides clients with skills training to reduce or re-direct negative behaviors and promotes and reinforces positive behaviors using verbal and nonverbal prompts.
  • Supervises clients in vocational skills training and maintains client time sheets for paid jobs.
  • Assists clients with personal care activities such as toileting, feeding, and personal hygiene.
  • Assists clients with personal devices such as a wheelchair, walker, prosthesis, or brace.
  • Lifts or transfers adult clients.
  • Lifts or moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Drives van with clients to various community locations as required.

Benefits

  • On-call employees who work an average of 30 hours per week for three consecutive months during the six-month measurement period are eligible for health insurance.
  • Temporary employees with regular hours are eligible for holiday pay.
  • At the time of hire, temporary on-call employees will receive 24 hours of sick leave that can be used after 90 days of employment.
  • If the employee has used any sick leave hours during the year, the total will be brought back up to 24 hours at the beginning of July each year.
