About The Position

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) is an entity within MUSC that provides healthcare to patients throughout the state of South Carolina. Under the direction of a registered nurse, the LPN is responsible for all identified nursing care behaviors during their tour of duty and participates in the care of a defined patient population within a secure correctional healthcare environment. This role involves providing patient/family centered care, acting as a partner and adviser, and assisting patients to optimally manage their health care while respecting individual needs, values, and preferences. The LPN applies critical reasoning and astute clinical judgment to expedite appropriate care and treatment, and uses critical thinking in clinical problem-solving relative to their scope of practice, knowledge, competency, and experience. The position is located at the Horry County Detention Center.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Practical Nurse program.
  • Licensed as an LPN in South Carolina or a compact state.
  • A current CPR card is required (AHA BLS or Red Cross Professional Rescuer).
  • Two years of related experience as an LPN.
  • Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support prior to the completion of general orientation.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient/family centered care, acting as partner and adviser, assisting patients to optimally manage their health care while respecting individual needs, values, and preferences.
  • Applies critical reasoning and astute clinical judgment to expedite appropriate care and treatment.
  • Uses critical thinking in clinical problem-solving relative to scope of practice, knowledge, competency, and experience.
  • Assists medical staff with preparation, examination, and procedures, including interviewing/screening patients, documenting findings, and obtaining vital signs.
  • Performs telephone and in-person screenings.
  • Participates in documentation and reporting responsibilities, prioritizes patient calls, and cleans/stocks exam rooms.
  • Performing nursing care for inmates/detainees in accordance with facility rules and security procedures.
  • Conducting medical intake screenings when needed during booking or admission.
  • Responding to medical emergencies inside the secure perimeter.
  • Working with correctional officers to ensure safe movement of inmates to and from the medical unit.
  • Maintaining control of sharps, medications, and medical equipment per correctional safety standards.
  • Providing care in environments that may include locked cells, exam rooms, segregation units, and intake/booking areas.
  • Maintaining required professionalism, boundaries, and awareness at all times.
