About The Position

The University Libraries Student Assistant is responsible for supporting the Resource Acquisitions & Discovery department's daily operations. Primary duties include opening boxes of books and reviewing contents against inventory or packing lists to ensure accuracy and completeness. The position involves providing assistance within the department workflow and working within the departments cataloging and acquisitions program modules. Other tasks may be assigned as needed to support departmental operations. Additional responsibilities include filing paperwork, labelling materials, shelving books, and taking packing materials to recycling receptacles.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student at The University of Alabama.
  • Ability to perform light physical tasks, including opening boxes, shelving books, and lifting or moving materials
  • Strong attention to detail and basic organizational skills
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Dependable and able to accurately complete routine tasks.
  • Professional, punctual, and respectful in work habits and interactions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills appropriate for a team based work environment.
  • Ability to accept direction, feedback, and training from supervisors and peers.
  • Understanding of and ability to follow facility rules, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and contribute positively to department workflows.
  • Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters.
  • Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment.
  • Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
  • Prior to hiring, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources.
