About The Position

The Library Specialist I is responsible for providing basic reference assistance and initial point of contact for Cushing-Evans Map Room. The specialist provides administrative support to ensure the Map Room remains in a secure, organized, and collaborative environment. This role retrieves and reshelves items and assists in coordinating transfers for digitization. Additionally, this role performs basic copy cataloging of maps and monographs. Requirements

  • High School graduation or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of related library, office or customer service experience.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Knowledge of email, word processing programs, and internet search engines.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable attendance.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Basic knowledge of maps and cartographic terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the initial point of contact for the Cushing-Evans Map Room; greets visitors and provides a professional orientation to room-specific procedures and access guidelines.
  • Monitors the Cushing-Evans Map Room to ensure a quiet and productive atmosphere; enforces policies and procedures (e.g. no food and drink, duplication policy, proper handling of special collections materials, etc.).
  • Conducts basic reference interviews to assess user needs and coordinates with the Map Curator or specialized colleagues when advanced subject-matter expertise is required.
  • Monitors and responds to basic reference inquiries received by email, phone, and postal mail, ensuring timely and accurate response.
  • Utilizes the library's automated cataloging system and archival management system to locate materials and process complex user requests.
  • Assists with duplication requests.
  • Retrieves, delivers, and reshelves materials; ensuring the Cushing-Evans Map Room remains organized, secure, and welcoming.
  • Assists with coordinating the transfer of materials between the Cushing-Evans Map Room and the preservation and digitization unit.
  • Assists in ensuring the security and preservation of Cushing-Evans Map Room materials.
  • Performs basic copy cataloging of monographs under general supervision of the Coordinator of Adaptive Cataloging & Resource Management.
  • Provides general assistance to colleagues in the Libraries.
  • Performs opening and closing procedures for the Map Room.
  • Collaborates with the supervisor and team members to identify and complete projects that benefit the Libraries.
  • Contributes to the unit by working effectively with all individuals.
