About The Position

The Library Specialist I role offers an opportunity to support a welcoming, service‑focused environment by providing high‑quality patron support at the Library Service Desks during weekday daytime hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.). The Library Specialist I role requires good interpersonal skills, reliable attendance, and excellent communication and customer service skills. This position also calls for someone who is detail‑oriented and comfortable using spreadsheets as part of daily workflows. The Library Specialist also supports Tech Bar services by processing late, non‑returned, and damaged equipment by updating patron records to reflect late fees, replacement charges, or damage‑related costs in accordance with established procedures. This position plays an important part in maintaining smooth daily operations and ensuring a positive experience for all library users.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of related library, customer service or office experience.
  • Must be able to work Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.
  • Must be able to adjust schedule on an occasional basis to help cover during extended hours or in the event of an emergency.
  • Must be able to work early evenings and days during periods between academic semesters.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable attendance.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

  • Desk Operations - Provides basic front desk service coverage at designated Library Service Desks during assigned hours. Assists users with accessing library resources, including the online catalog, Tech Bar items, research guides, physical collections, and electronic databases. Uses the library system to charge and discharge materials and explain relevant library and Tech Bar policies, procedures, and resource availability. Conducts basic information interviews to help patrons understand library systems and provide clear directional assistance. Delivers effective referrals to supervisors, librarians, or other service points when appropriate. Demonstrates basic conflict resolution skills with users and support student employees during difficult or confrontational situations. Assists with reservations, walk‑up inquiries, locating materials, processing new items, and answering questions related to overdue fines, fees, and billing.
  • Late Return Processing and Tech Bar Support - Assists with processing, organizing, and daily operations of Tech Bar equipment, including new, existing, and damaged items. Performs the processing and documentation of late, non-returned, and/or damaged Tech Bar equipment. Updates patron records to reflect applicable fees in accordance with established procedures. Ensures accurate tracking of return times, associated charges, and equipment status within the system.
  • Service Desk Backup - Provides desk coverage and support for Library service point locations across campus as needed. Assist with coverage during staff shortages and during special hours, including extended hours for finals or other high‑demand periods.
  • Emergency Response - Responds promptly to security or fire alarms and other building emergencies, taking appropriate action to ensure safety. Facilitates safe evacuation procedures and implements the administrative Call Tree when needed. Conducts post‑event department checks to confirm safety and operational readiness. Serves as a point of contact during crises and coordinate with appropriate authorities as appropriate.
