About The Position

Under general supervision, this position ensures library materials are available for patron use and assists patrons with using library services. This is accomplished by processing returned books and materials, checking materials out to patrons, issuing new library cards, and shelving library materials. Other duties may include opening and closing library facilities, coordinating programs, receiving and processing books and materials, and interfacing with City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus one (1) or more years of relevant experience.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.
  • Requires a varying schedule that includes working evenings, nights, and weekends.
  • Basic library operations, policies, and procedures, including materials check-out, returns, and cataloging.
  • City and departmental guidelines for customer service and patron interaction.
  • Organizational systems for library materials, such as the Dewey Decimal System or other relevant cataloging systems.
  • Computer applications and software used for library management, including data entry and patron account management.
  • Safety and security protocols for library facilities and resources.
  • General office practices, procedures, and equipment, including cash handling and reconciliation.
  • Providing excellent customer service, addressing questions, and explaining library policies and procedures to patrons.
  • Processing and shelving books and other library materials accurately and efficiently.
  • Managing time effectively to balance routine tasks like shelving, check-out, and returns with additional responsibilities.
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, with library patrons, volunteers, and City employees.
  • Operating audio-visual equipment, office machines, and point-of-sale systems for cash handling.
  • Maintaining a positive and professional demeanor while working with a diverse public audience.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around the library for extended periods, including reaching, bending, and kneeling.
  • Ability to carry, push, and pull materials such as books, carts, and other library equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly.
  • Fine motor skills for handling books and materials, typing, stamping, and covering books.
  • Comfortable working with frequent interruptions and engaging with patrons in a sometimes busy environment.
  • Ability to open and close library facilities, which includes managing cash reconciliation, logging computers, and securing the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Processes returned books and materials by collecting materials from book-drops, removing date stickers, inspecting materials for damage and completeness, noting and reporting mending and damages, sorting items appropriately for shelving, collecting fees for overdue, lost and damaged materials, replacing cards and updating accounts and printing receipts.
  • Checks out materials to library guests by using the computer to check materials out, attaching security date stickers or cards, renewing materials for patrons and providing record information about accounts.
  • Issues new library cards by verifying patron information, entering information into the computer, stating the current policies of the library and the limits on library materials and answering questions and inquiries from the patrons.
  • Shelves library materials by transporting books and materials to the correct location, placing books and materials on the shelf in the correct order and rearranging books and straightening materials as needed.
  • Opens and closes library facilities by logging computers on and off of the system, changing due date stickers and video cards, compiling reports, reconciling cash registers and unlocking and locking doors.
  • Implements and coordinates programs by preparing program information and advertisements such as flyers, brochures, calendars, signs, posters and bulletin board displays, creating and preparing crafts and props for programs, organizing and maintaining craft supplies, organizing and distributing work assignments to volunteers, supervising volunteers, maintaining files and operating audio-visual and office machines.
  • Receives and processes new books and library materials by typing spine labels, stamping books, covering books with the appropriate book covers, reprocessing selected repairs, checking received materials against packing slips, matching invoices to packing slips, checking received orders against placed orders, placing orders on the book cart in the same sequence as the invoice, placing barcode on items and maintains files and copies of invoices.
