This position is for the full academic year. THIS POSITION IS FOR UPPERCLASSMEN ONLY. FRESHMEN ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR DEPARTMENT POSITIONS. Expected hours of work per week : 10-20 Work Location & Hours : Kresge Library; Mon-Thu 7:30 am-midnight; Fri 7:30am- 5:30pm; Sat 11 am-6pm Expectations for work hours: It is expected that you will be hired to work a specific number of hours per week, as low as 10 and no higher than 20. The number will be decided at the time the student is interviewed and hired, and a repeating weekly schedule will be set before classes begin each semester. Shifts begin on the first day of classes and run through the end of exams. Exam week schedule will be adjusted to accommodate exams, and the number of hours that week will be lower. In this role you will Warmly welcome patrons and community members Serve patrons by checking items in and out, placing holds, and communicating account information Maintain professionalism in punctuality, dress, demeanor Answer phone and direct questions to the appropriate staff member Answer general questions concerning the library and campus Familiarize patrons with shelving basics and the layout of the collection Assist patrons in searching the library catalogue, locating resources, and navigating the library Maintain a friendly working relationship with the team and professional library staff Reshelve books accurately Maintain order and cleanliness throughout the library collection by shelf reading and dusting Maintain hospitable library spaces - straighten, spot clean and sanitize on a daily basis Assist with library projects and special tasks as needed Open and close the building without supervision, ensuring the security and safety of the building, its resources, and its users Respond to emergencies quickly and efficiently, with the safety of patrons as a top priority Resume skills development (NACE Competencies required by employers) to be developed Career & Self-Development including developing competence with software and hardware of the library developing fluency with the Library of Congress shelving order cultivating a warm, hospitable customer service mentality Communication in the form of honing the ability to teach others– patrons as well as new library team members utilizing a positive vocabulary with patrons by articulating creative alternatives to "no" and "I don't know." learning how to confidently and respectfully communicate questions and concerns with full-time library staff Critical Thinking in the form of growing in creative problem-solving by tackling a wide variety of patrons' questions developing analytical abilities by continually practicing shelf-reading and ordering of books Global Literacy displayed by cultivating unqualified hospitality for patrons and community members of all ages and backgrounds recognizing and appreciating the diverse talents and backgrounds of co-workers Leadership through growing in confidence to lead new team members both by example and training assisting full-time library employees in developing daily protocols and training resources Professionalism by growing the ability to anticipate and efficiently respond to the needs of patrons cultivating ownership of shifts and meeting the high expectations for personal responsibility Teamwork including participating in group communication in order to help team members cultivating and communicating a positive attitude about our work together Technology learning skills with software, hardware, copier/printer honing search skills by increasing familiarity with the library homepage, available databases, and archived materials Work Habits (with alignment of Core Values) The College asks its staff members the following fundamental work habits: Do good work.
