The UEIS division at Carnegie Mellon University encompasses University Libraries, the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, the Entertainment Technology Center, the Integrated Design, Arts and Technology program, and the University Sustainability Initiative. CMU’s University Libraries team is seeking a detail‑oriented, customer‑focused Library Associate to support a wide range of public service and clerical functions. In this role, you’ll help patrons navigate library resources — from books and electronic materials to media equipment and ongoing library initiatives — both in person and through email and chat. You’ll use library systems and tools to assist with acquisitions, cataloging, metadata creation, and circulation tasks, and you may also help guide student employees. This position contributes to special projects, provides basic research and clerical support, and gathers statistics to inform library operations. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1-3 years of related experience required.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • Successful background check
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States.
  • CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
  • CMU is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon

Responsibilities

  • Assists in training, supervising, and evaluating student employees.
  • Assists with ILLiad borrowing and lending requests initiated within the science libraries.
  • Assists with various collection maintenance issues such as shelving, shifting, weeding.
  • Attends and participates in departmental and other organizational meetings, seminars, and classes.
  • Coordinates and supervises PALCI/EZ-Borrow borrowing and lending activities within the University Libraries, Science libraries.
  • In the absence of the Science Libraries, Circulation Manager, supervises the circulation desk and is responsible for overall building supervision, including supervision of student assistants, building security and orderliness.
  • Opens and closes the library according to established local procedures.
  • Performs regular checks of the Mellon Library to ensure orderliness of spaces, equipment, and other library materials, and supports Access Services work for the libraries system-wide at other service points as required.
  • Performs circulation tasks such as checking out library materials, providing basic technical support, accepting payments for library fines and resolving patron account issues, assisting with local physical and partial scan requests, technology lending and maintenance.
  • Processes resource sharing materials in a timely manner, both shipping and receiving.
  • Works with the University Libraries’ Billing Assistant to monitor and coordinate billing and payment of lost materials.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
