About The Position

The person in this position will work in Circulation, providing access to resources and information at the Service Desk, as well as maintaining building safety and security. The person in this position may support or take the lead in one or more areas, such as Course Reserves, Scan & Deliver, Document Delivery, Interlibrary Loan, Outreach activities, and student employee direction.

Requirements

  • Completion of a high school education or equivalent certification and two years of related library and/or clerical experience required.
  • In addition to Position Skill Level I requirements, work at this level typically requires the following range of skills:
  • Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
  • General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic records.
  • Ability to interpret library unit’s policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions, as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes.
  • Working knowledge of institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
  • Basic knowledge of national standards and guidelines pertaining to libraries, including working knowledge of institution’s standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to source and apply such policies and standards to avoid potential violations.
  • Full proficiency in the use of automated library system(s) and subsystem(s) pertaining to functional area.
  • Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work or assist patrons.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems.
  • General knowledge of library accounting and budget procedures, including the ability to perform arithmetic operations to track and monitor vendor accounts and budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
  • Effective communication and interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints, assess patron information needs, and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources.
  • Ability to effectively provide lead work direction and training to student workers and an understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Experience in a customer service situation, preferably in an academic student support setting.
  • Three years of related library and/or clerical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Access Services Operations (includes Building Safety & Security, Circulation, Course Reserves, Inter-library Loan/Resource Sharing, Reference, Stacks Maintenance): Provide direct services to library users, work direction for Circulation student workers, carry out routine circulation functions, and assist in day-to-day care of the library building collaboratively with other library personnel. Carry out building opening and closing routines and work evening and/or weekend hours, as needed.
  • -Applies working knowledge of Access Services operations to independently interpret and implement unit policies and procedures accurately and consistently in daily operations.
  • -Assists patrons with borrowing and returning items and resolving account issues, with full proficiency in the integrated library system and subsystem modules to perform these duties.
  • -Reviews and resolves routine patron account issues and refers complex matters to appropriate personnel; maintains accurate records and ensures clear communication of relevant information.
  • -Demonstrates effective communication and interpretive skills to be able to assist patrons with locating and using library resources and services (online and physically), providing directional information, resolving patron problems and complaints, assessing patron information needs, and referring patrons to a librarian for in-depth library research assistance.
  • -Participates in the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, supervision and evaluation of student workers.
  • -Assists with identifying and communicating about potential safety and security issues in the building with Community Service Officers and University Police Department.
  • -Assists with identifying and reporting physical plant and custodial issues to facilities and custodial services personnel.
  • -Assists with course reserves processes, including scan & deliver, as needed.
  • -Assists with interlibrary loan and resource sharing borrowing and lending processes, as needed.
  • -Assists with reviewing, revising, and communicating policies and procedures.
  • Other Public Services Operations: -Assists with marketing and outreach for programs, services, and collections. -Assists with a variety of Access Services related data collection and compilation (circulation statistics, occupancy counts, feedback, program attendance, requests, etc.).
  • -Assists with tours and providing education on CSUSB Libraries’ programs, resources, and services.
  • Other Classification-Related Duties as assigned.
