About The Position

The Children's Services Librarian delivers dynamic, customer-focused library service. This role involves carrying out high-impact early-literacy and other programming initiatives, conducting extensive outreach to schools, and collaborating with the Information Services team. Professional duties also include providing reference service (in-person and online), tech and readers' advisory help, and ongoing collection maintenance. Key skills for this position include reference interviewing, clear communication, patience, and instructional clarity, all of which are essential for serving our diverse community, including immigrants, seniors (55+), and people with varying abilities. The schedule consists of five 8-hour shifts per week, including regular evenings (typically one per week) and weekends (typically one Sunday per month). Day shifts are 8:30 AM–5:00 PM or 9:30 AM–6:00 PM. Marysville Library is a large-sized community library located in the East District of Sno-Isle Libraries, serving a rapidly growing, economically vibrant, and diverse community in Snohomish County that includes the neighboring Tulalip Indian Reservation. The library is open seven days a week and offers inclusive and accessible programming, collections, and services that reflect diverse cultures and perspectives. This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by AFSCME Council 2. Sno-Isle Libraries is committed to embedding equity into our organization. Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of established web-based databases and techniques of searching and accessing those resources.
  • Thorough knowledge of library resources, programs, and services in a public library.
  • Knowledge of the principles of intellectual freedom in public libraries.
  • Knowledge of collection development policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of alpha and numeric systems for arranging library materials as well as automated bibliographic identification at a basic level.
  • Thorough knowledge of library policies and procedures for determining needs and interests of customers.
  • Strong organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to uphold the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and the community.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to handle and resolve disruptive behavior effectively.

  • Ability to operate relevant computer systems including hardware and software, such as Microsoft Office, electronic databases and electronic content platforms, e-mail, chat, social media platforms, and internet navigation in addition to other office equipment and security systems.
  • Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university required, or completion of the degree within six months of hire.
  • Provide a Washington State Librarian certificate within 60 days of hire or degree completion.

Responsibilities

  • Provides professional research assistance to customers, either in-person, over the phone, or electronically.
  • Assists with collection maintenance duties for materials and resources in various formats.
  • Develops and presents various library programs (educational, early literacy, community interest, or civic engagement and individual customer research or instructional sessions).
  • Creates and curates online content to meet community needs and interests.
  • Assists in development and evaluation of library services in line with the strategic focus.
  • Represents the library to a wide variety of community groups.
  • May be in charge of the building in the absence of other supervisory staff.
  • Serves on various library committees as assigned.
  • Coordinates library volunteers as needed.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports.
  • Trains new staff as needed.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development.
  • Assists with special projects as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
