About The Position

The Legislative Assistant will join a diverse and talented team to help Councilmember Ahmad achieve her goals of helping the City of Philadelphia to become a more equitable, transparent, data-driven government that is responsive to the needs of the people by working with team members, community members, City Council, the City administration, and other stakeholders to improve the lives of residents throughout the City of Philadelphia. This position requires a driven and self-motivated individual who exercises discretion and independent judgment while handling confidential and sensitive matters in support of the Councilmember. It requires a general working knowledge of City Council’s legislative process and the Councilmember’s goals and priorities. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with staff within the office, as well as with the Council, City Administration and constituent groups. The candidate should have the ability to pivot when necessary, and enjoys researching and analyzing data. This is not a typical 9-5 job and may require longer nights and weekends.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of two years of working experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the legislative team to advance the Councilmember's priorities.
  • Monitor legislative developments in City Council and provide co-sponsorship and vote recommendations to the Legislative Director as necessary.
  • Attend City Council meetings, committee hearings, and community events to provide support as needed.
  • Staffing the Councilmember at various events and attending meetings on behalf of the Councilmember.
  • Maintain an understanding of the Philadelphia Code; identify opportunities for legislative intervention.
  • Collaborate with other city departments, agencies, and external partners to facilitate the drafting of legislation and the implementation of policies and programs.
  • Assist with negotiations with stakeholders and departments, when needed, to reach the passage of legislation while prioritizing the Councilmember's vision.
  • Form connections with Council offices, administrative departments, unions, and other entities relating to our policy interests.
