About The Position

The Legal Secretary position at the Lake County Attorney's Office is responsible for managing citations, discovery, and evidence received from law enforcement agencies, ensuring all necessary information is obtained and organized within the office's filing software. A key aspect of the role involves securely and timely distributing this information to defense attorneys, upholding data integrity and confidentiality. Additionally, the secretary prepares discovery for trial, which includes using document and video editing software for trimming and redacting media.

Requirements

  • Effective communication skills to interact with law enforcement, supervisors, employees, and the general public
  • Specific vision abilities including the ability to adjust focus for extended periods of computer work and reading documents
  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer, filing software, and other office equipment efficiently
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to frequently sit and reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to occasionally stoop, kneel, and climb
  • Ability to travel within the county in all weather conditions
  • Minimum of two years of law office experience

Nice To Haves

  • PARALEGAL experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of Law office practice (preferably criminal law)
  • Familiarity with Justice Court and District Court procedures
  • Familiarity with legal terminology and statutes
  • Familiarity with various office equipment including telephone, fax machine, copier, printer, computer, and media equipment
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Familiarity with Safety rules, procedures and practices

Responsibilities

  • Receive citations, discovery and evidence from law enforcement agencies
  • Communicate with law enforcement agencies to obtain any additional discovery needed
  • Organize discovery neatly in filing software
  • Distribute information to defense attorneys in a secure and timely manner
  • Maintain the integrity and confidentiality of data
  • Prepare discovery for trial, including using document or video editing software to trim and redact media
  • Interact effectively with law enforcement, supervisors, employees, and the general public
  • Adjust focus for extended periods of computer work and reading documents
  • Operate a computer, filing software, and other office equipment efficiently
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Frequently sit and reach with hands and arms
  • Occasionally stoop, kneel, and climb
  • Travel within the county in all weather conditions as needed
  • Create and organize physical and electronic legal files for criminal, Youth in Need, and civil cases
  • Order or procure various reports from different agencies
  • Collect and process daily jail information and citations from law enforcement
  • Prepare motions, orders, notices, plea agreements, and various other legal documents
  • Calendar hearings, motion responses, and discovery deadlines
  • Request and process all discovery, ensuring it is organized and securely distributed
  • File legal documents with Justice Court and District Court and distribute
  • Communicate with victims and law enforcement regarding case status both orally and in writing
  • Assist attorneys in trial preparation as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
