About The Position

Rochester Regional Health is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Legal Intern to support the Office of General Counsel with various tasks. The ideal candidate will assist in organizing both digital and physical legal files, manage subpoena responses, help with litigation holds, and assist with creation/review of simple contracts. Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to shadow attorneys during meetings and legal negotiations, gaining valuable insight into the legal process within the healthcare industry. This internship offers the opportunity to gain valuable legal experience in a healthcare setting, working closely with attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants in the Office of General Counsel.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a law school program, or currently enrolled in a college program with a pre-law major or minor.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in healthcare law and the legal aspects of hospital operations.
  • Familiarity with legal research tools is a plus (e.g., LexisNexis, Westlaw).

Responsibilities

  • Organize Legal Files: Assist with organizing and maintaining both physical and electronic legal files, helping to ensure compliance with health system policies and applicable regulations.
  • Subpoena Management and Litigation Holds: Support the legal team in responding to subpoenas, including gathering necessary documents and ensuring timely and proper submission of materials, and in responding to litigation holds.
  • Meeting and Negotiation Support: Attend meetings with attorneys and assist in preparation for legal negotiations. Take notes, assist with document preparation, and help ensure meetings run smoothly.
  • Board Materials: Assist with preparation and organization of annual board meeting minutes. Organize hard copy corporate documents. Work to ensure corporate archives are complete, and fill in any missing gaps with information from the New York Department of State.
  • Legal Research: Conduct basic legal research on a variety of healthcare-related legal matters, as assigned by attorneys.
  • Document Drafting and Review: Assist with drafting and reviewing simple legal documents, contracts, and correspondence under attorney supervision.
  • Administrative Support: Provide general administrative support to the legal team, including scheduling meetings, maintaining calendars, and tracking deadlines.
  • Confidentiality and Compliance: Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive patient and legal information in accordance with privacy laws and hospital policies.
