The goal of the in-house legal internship program is to provide students who have completed their first year of law school with the opportunity to acquire practical experience supporting a complex and diversified healthcare and health insurance enterprise. Legal interns will receive various assignments which address unique legal and business issues arising across different organizational markets and segments. The interns will work directly with the assigning attorney on a particular matter, including discussing progress, seeking out clarity as needed, identifying any barriers, and remaining accountable for the work product through completion. Interns will have a dedicated manager to meet with on a bi-weekly basis to discuss overall workload, program experience, professional development, and other related topics. Mentors will also be assigned to each intern and be available to discuss law school, career options/career path, experience at Highmark and other employers, and other related topics. Interns are also encouraged to engage directly with all employees of the Highmark Health Law Department throughout the course of the internship to establish personal and professional connections. SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES This job has the goal of providing the opportunity to acquire practical experience through direct exposure to the related business line(s) and to develop the next generation of diverse business professionals. To that end, the program will provide hands-on training and experience in the business line, expose the various career opportunities in the business line and related areas, and prepare participants for positions in the business. Typical responsibilities of legal interns include, but are not limited to: Conducting legal research of Federal and State laws, regulations, agency guidance, compliance frameworks, etc., performing legal analysis, and producing written work product including memos, summaries, findings, and/or recommendations for action as it pertains to the particular subject matter, market, and/or business segment. Participating in the preparation of regulatory filings, document productions, investigation responses, and similar documentation. Assistance in corporate governance maintenance such as meeting minutes, resolutions, and related documentation. Review of member or patient- provided legal documentation such as Power of Attorney, Advance Directive for Healthcare, Guardianship and Custody Orders, etc. Provisional review and analysis of contract documents such as master service agreements, business associate agreements, non-disclosure agreements, data sharing agreements, licensing agreements, etc.; and Introductory exposure to litigation matters such as subpoena reviews and responses, pleadings reviews and responses, discovery requests and document productions, etc., and other matters, inquiries, and consults routinely handled by the Law Department in providing enterprise legal support.
