The Opportunity This position will advise TC Energy’s U.S. Natural Gas Pipelines business concerning high-stakes, cutting-edge legal issues related to the development of new pipeline infrastructure and the operation of the Company’s existing pipeline systems. The scope of work encompasses a wide variety of transactions and disputes related to property rights, and the successful candidate will have opportunities to leverage transactional, regulatory and litigation skill sets. The position will report to the Director of Business Development and Projects Law in the U.S. Natural Gas Pipelines Law department.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Juris Doctorate from ABA-accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in the U.S.
  • Minimum four years of relevant legal experience
  • Ability to analyze complex matters in a proactive manner, focusing on actionable, business-oriented solutions
  • Ability to work as a trusted partner to the business, collaborating across the Legal team and other departments to achieve shared goals and navigate risk consistent with operational and strategic priorities
  • A growth mindset and desire to embrace learning in all aspects of your work with curiosity and creativity, building capabilities as needed to meet evolving needs and opportunities

Nice To Haves

  • General understanding of the natural gas pipeline business
  • Experience with property rights and project development of pipelines and other energy infrastructure
  • Significant experience with condemnation, project permitting and regulatory permitting related to natural gas pipeline infrastructure
  • Litigation experience in federal courts
  • Prior in-house experience and/or previous related federal agency experience

Responsibilities

  • Advise business teams, including senior leaders, concerning complex, technical and sensitive issues related to project development, construction and property rights
  • Advise business teams, including senior leaders, on matters related to growth projects at all stages of the project life cycle (including preparation and drafting of applications, pleadings, and other related filings, as well as federal, state, and local permitting issues)
  • Manage disputes and litigation involving property claims, including by analyzing, drafting and negotiating pleadings and other critical documentation, and potentially representing the company in adjudicatory proceedings
  • Draft, review and directly negotiate a wide variety of real estate documents including purchase/sale agreements, easement agreements, access and temporary workspace agreements, license agreements with governmental agencies, and reimbursement and relocation agreements
  • Participate in industry trade groups and association committees to contribute thought leadership and advocacy on legislative and regulatory issues that impact TC Energy
  • Manage matters and supervise external legal counsel within approved budget limits
  • Provide legal support for the TC Energy’s U.S. emergency response program
