Requirements

  • Must be a licensed Attorney in the U.S.
  • At least 4-7 years in a business environment as in-house counsel or comparable law firm experience.
  • Highly developed skills and significant experience with environmental and safety compliance, permitting and incident response, and privileged investigations.
  • Experience working directly with business executives and operations.
  • Ability to be strategic, practical, assertive, adaptable, creative and flexible.
  • Ability to analyze and extrapolate information and have strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment.
  • Ability to identify risks and propose alternative approaches to mitigate.
  • Ability to handle a large volume and variety of legal projects simultaneously.
  • Proven ability to manage external counsel.
  • Excellent decision-making and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to perform independently and to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Skills and experience with agricultural crop inputs regulation encompassing the mining, manufacture, transportation and sales and application of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.
  • Skills and experience with environmental and safety compliance and permitting and incident response and privileged investigations.
  • Prior experience in project management.
  • Excellent analytical research and documentation writing skills as demonstrated by past draft examples.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal guidance to internal Nutrien stakeholders with accountability within the Safety Health & Environmental function, encompassing all aspects of compliance with the law and best practices applicable to environmental and health and safety matters.
  • Advise on environmental, safety and security requirements, permitting and compliance and incident response and privileged investigations, and provide counsel on other regulatory, safety, and environmental matters as needed.
  • Initiate and manage privileged investigations as necessary.
  • Provide input on the decisions of whether to retain external counsel and assist in the oversight of same when retained.
  • Continuously monitor, identify and communicate regulatory compliance requirements that have the potential to impact Nutrien Globally.
  • Synthesize and provide guidance to senior leadership and other internal Nutrien stakeholders interpreting regulatory compliance standards and recommended paths forward that align with Nutrien’s strategic priorities.
  • Clearly identify risks and regulatory strategies to mitigate risks across subject matters in all jurisdictions in which the company operates or sells to.
  • Participate in various associations and working groups related to regulatory, safety and environmental matters.
  • Provide legal guidance on the integration of acquired businesses with respect to environmental and safety matters, ensuring compliance with applicable legal requirements and Nutrien’s policies.
  • Comply with all Company standards, policies and procedures pertaining to appropriate conduct for employees, including the Statement of Core Values and Code of Business Conduct; the Respect in the Workplace Policy; Safety, Health and Environment Policies; and any other applicable standards, policies and procedures as implemented and/or revised by the Company or by legislation.
