About The Position

Legal Collections Specialist/General Clerk III ROLE We need a financial collections professional at the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Pennsylvania (USAO EDPA). The USAO EDPA's Financial Litigation Unit (FLU) is responsible for the collection of criminal and civil debts owed to the United States and victims of crime. In this role, you will provide assistance to Financial Litigation staff in the collection of criminal and civil debts, including preparation and filing of legal documents, preparation and mailing of correspondence, reviewing claims and supporting documentation, obtaining additional data as needed, determining the adequacy of claims, initiating contacts with debtors, and preparing and presenting statistical data and reports for management purposes. Requirements

  • Proficiently use Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with staff, supervisors, and external parties

Responsibilities

  • Assist Financial Litigation staff in the collection of criminal and civil debts owed to the United States and victims of crime
  • Initiate contact with debtors regarding their obligation and ability to pay
  • Open and maintain debtor files and ensure proper debtor and account information is recorded
  • Analyze claims to determine type of indebtedness and assess adequacy of supporting documentation
  • Prepare and file legal documents in support of Financial Litigation staff
  • Prepare and mail correspondence related to debt collection activities
  • Maintain a wide variety of financial and other records stored manually and electronically
  • Use PEGA and Opera computer databases in support of daily duties
  • Obtain additional data as needed to support collection cases
  • Review claims and supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness
  • Assist with a variety of administrative matters in support of Financial Litigation operations
  • Verify statistical reports for accuracy and completeness
  • Compile information and prepare statistical data and reports for use by supervisors for management purposes
  • Handle and adjust complaints as needed
  • Apply knowledge of the Federal Debt Collections Procedures Act, Mandatory Victims' Restitution Act, and other applicable federal and state law to complete assignments
