About The Position

Position responsibilities will include teaching A.A.S. and B.S. courses in an ABET-accredited surveying engineering program. Courses may include topics such as GIS, photogrammetry, surveying principles and adjustments, legal aspects, engineering ethics, etc. Work with fellow faculty members in the advancement of the Surveying curriculum. Courses are to be taught in person on one of Ferris State University's Campuses or approved FSU sites. The candidate(s) selected for the position must reside in Michigan after acceptance of employment and will perform duties at a Ferris site. The anticipated start date of this position is August 2026 at the earliest and January 2027 at the latest.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in field or closely related field and 5 years of relevant industry experience directly related to courses taught OR
  • A master’s or higher-level degree out of field with at least one bachelor’s or associate’s degree in field and 7 years of relevant industry experience directly related to courses taught OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in field and 10 years of relevant industry experience directly related to courses taught

  • Technically competent in the use of computers and high-level programming languages and the use of GIS and digital photogrammetric software, and surveying instruments.
  • Able to use GIS software (ArcPRO, QGIS), use of Matlab/Octave, drone processing software like PixElement, Pix4d, image processing software like iWitness
  • Use of GPS equipment and surveying total stations
  • Demonstrated successful experience working directly with people from diverse backgrounds, including cultural, educational, socioeconomic, and life experiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to develop on-line curriculum.
  • A drone Pilot Certification or the ability to obtain one would be beneficial in the instruction for certain courses within Surveying.

Responsibilities

  • The primary professional responsibilities are teaching lower and upper division courses in surveying such as GIS, photogrammetry and surveying principles and adjustments.
  • Prepare and deliver up-to-date coursework and course-related materials that meets established course outcomes.
  • Meet with courses at their scheduled times.
  • May be required to teach evenings, off-campus, or on-line.
  • Grade all course content and student work for assigned courses.
  • Maintain communication with students.
  • Maintain professional currency.
  • Professional involvement at local, state, and national levels.
  • Act as liaison between the program and professional organizations.
  • Directly responsible to the School Director.
  • Perform duties in accordance with established University policies.
  • Cultivates an environment of belonging that values, respects, supports, and celebrates individual similarities and differences, allowing students, faculty and staff to thrive authentically.
  • Support, promote, and develop university student enrollment and retention initiatives.
  • Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
  • Faculty members also have professional responsibilities that may include continuing professional development; participation in curriculum development and university committees; orientation, recruitment, and registration of students; keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (i.e. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time). Faculty may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment.
