About The Position

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a 9-month renewable reading instructional academic staff in the area of literacy education with an emphasis on reading and language arts education beginning August 2026. This full-time position is responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in the Elementary/Middle School teacher preparation program, providing service, and/or performing comparable duties to those of teaching faculty members. The successful candidate will be able to teach literacy instruction, literacy assessment, and literacy theory and as part of the teacher preparation programs. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities, provide academic advising to students, and supervise pre-student teaching and student teaching field experiences. All instructional academic staff at UW-Whitewater may be required to teach online and hybrid classes, evening and weekend classes, and provide service to the university and the local community in a variety of modalities, including committee work, leading Learning Communities, mentoring students, and providing professional development for colleagues, schools, and community groups. Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to working with non-traditional students are essential for this position.

Requirements

• A master's degree in literacy education, or a related field is required.
• Strong credentials in reading/literacy instruction with skills in the foundations of reading, writing, and critical discourse.
• A minimum of three years of K-12 teaching experience is required, along with an equivalent background to qualify for a Wisconsin reading teacher license.
• Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
• Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills

Nice To Haves

• Terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D) in literacy education or a closely related field and an equivalent background to qualify for a Wisconsin reading specialist license are preferred.
• University-level teaching experience in reading, academic advising, and supervision; a demonstrated commitment to preparing teachers within a multicultural context; collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-departmental teams; and experience with online instruction.

Responsibilities

• Full-time teaching responsibilities include teaching literacy courses, service, practicum supervision, and student teaching field experiences.
• Service responsibilities include committee and professional service relevant to the candidate's expertise and interest and serving as academic advisors/mentors to students.
• Instructional academic staff at UW-W may be required to teach online and in a hybrid format or courses in the evenings or on weekends.
• Serves as an initial point of contact for students as it relates to specific course or series content and expectations
• Develops instructional design and curriculum relevant to a course of instruction
• Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction for one or more courses, including assessment of student performance
