About The Position

The School of Social Work at Sacramento State is one of the largest accredited social work programs in California, dedicated to training a diverse student body to prepare the next generation of social work professionals for the region and beyond. The School prepares ethical and competent generalists and specialized social workers who can both lead and serve rich and intersectionally diverse communities in the development and delivery of psychosocial and clinical services that contribute to human wellbeing and social justice. It offers a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) for generalist practice. For the Master of Social Work degree, three pathways are offered: a traditional two-year program, an extended part-time (three-year) program, and an Advanced Standing (one-year) program for those holding an accredited BASW degree (within 5 years of application). MASW students specialize in one of three areas: behavioral health; health and aging; or practice with children and families. A training program for those committed to a career in child welfare (Title IV-E program) is also available. The School encourages applicants who are highly intersectionally diverse, seasoned practitioners (micro through macro), and committed to participating in and building an equitable and highly diverse scholarly learning environment promoting health equity and social justice. Subject area needs vary but include: Generalist practice (BASW or MASW), Advanced graduate-level practice in behavioral health, health & aging, or children and families, Field (practicum) supervision, Macro practice (including administration, supervision, community organizing, and policy practice), Advocacy, Program evaluation and grant writing, Psychodiagnosing (using DSM-5-TR), substance use disorders, forensics, Statistics, Social science research methodologies (including experimental (quantitative) methods and qualitative traditions), Social science and critical theories (in particular human behavior and the social environment (HBSE)), Cultural diversity, social justice, power/privilege/oppression, U.S. social welfare policy, and Practice with specialty populations (e.g., Veterans, LGBTQ+ communities, international settings, gerontology, neurocognitive and developmental disabilities).

Requirements

  • For most courses: A Master of Social Work (MSW) or an equivalent graduate degree in social work or a closely related field, such as: MSSW, MA/AM in Social Work or Social Welfare, Other relevant graduate degrees (MA/MS in Sociology, Economics, Psychology, Public Health, or Feminist Studies)
  • For most courses: A minimum of two years of post-MSW professional practice experience
  • For select undergraduate practice or field seminar courses: A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)
  • For select undergraduate practice or field seminar courses: A minimum of five years of post-BSW relevant practice experience

Nice To Haves

  • Having at least five years of post-MSW professional practice experience, especially relevant for teaching graduate-level practice courses
  • Holds a license or credentials such as: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the State of California from the BBS, or a comparable independent clinical social work license from another state
  • Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) in California
  • National Association of Social Workers (NASW) credentials (e.g., ACSW, DCSW)
  • Board Certified Diplomate (BCD) or similar from a recognized credentialing body
