About The Position

The Department of English at Christopher Newport University invites applications for the position of Lecturer in English, effective August 2026. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track position with a nominal teaching load of 4-4. The rank of lecturer is an initial appointment, typically to a fixed-term contract of one year, which may be renewed at the sole discretion of the University. In the third consecutive year of annual appointments, a lecturer may apply for a fixed-term contract of three years. Following this period, qualified candidates may also be eligible for a renewable longer-term appointment. Outstanding performance in teaching, service, and research may lead to advancement in rank to Senior Lecturer and eventually to Master Lecturer. The individual appointed to this position will predominantly teach freshman and sophomore writing seminars designed to support student success within and beyond the university. We seek a candidate with a terminal MA or a Doctoral degree in English or a related field, and/or significant teaching experience in composition studies. The successful applicant will be able to teach writing courses that prepare students for professional and applied contexts-such as medical advocacy, digital humanities, publishing and editing, linguistics, or childhood studies. A background in one or more of these fields will receive strong preference in the selection process.
