About The Position

Brooklyn Heights Montessori School (BHMS) offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum built on the philosophy of Maria Montessori to children aged two years through eighth grade. Students work and learn in mixed-age classes led by teaching teams of thoughtful and well-trained professionals. The students have exposure to a full range of academic and artistic courses. BHMS also offers an after-school program and a summer day camp. The School is housed in a beautiful facility in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn and is ideally located for convenient access to all parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Full-year Family Leave Replacement: Upper Elementary/Middle School (grades 4-8) Learning Specialist Start Date: Late August 2026 Reports to: School Psychologist, Assistant Head of School Brief Description: The Upper Elementary/Middle School Learning Specialist is a full-time, 10-month position at the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School. The Upper Elementary/Middle School Learning Specialist works as a part of a team of classroom teachers, administrators, the School Psychologist, Lower Elementary Learning Specialist, and Early Childhood Learning Specialist to aid student learning in grades 4-8 through teaching, observation, and teacher support.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Special Education or related field
  • Three or more years of direct experience supporting students with learning needs in Upper Elementary and Middle School years
  • An understanding of and appreciation for Montessori education

Responsibilities

  • Generate and maintain Student Learning Plans (SLP) throughout each school year, and disseminate SLP for teachers and families
  • Meet with families to review Student Learning Plans (along with Assistant Head of School and/or School Psychologist)
  • Ensure teachers have current copies of SLP
  • Manage in-school and testing accommodations for students with learning plans
  • Provide both pull-out and push-in small group and/or individual support in language-based classes, math, Montessori work periods, and after school for students as necessary
  • Attend and collaborate on weekly student, curriculum, Upper Elementary and Middle School meetings
  • Observe students, as necessary, to gather specific information to inform discussions with teachers, families, outside support, and record and share that information with the Support Services Team
  • Collaborate with the School Psychologist to manage all aspects of standardized testing
  • Collaborate with Upper Elementary teachers to complete biannual reading assessments
  • Meet regularly with the Assistant Head of School and School Psychologist
  • Meet regularly with the Lower Elementary Learning Specialist to create alignment and consistency across programs
  • Provide all classroom teachers with specific strategies and support for students needing academic remediation and/or acceleration
  • Collaborate with Upper Elementary/Middle School teachers and the Assistant Head of School on writing and editing student report cards with a focus on students with SLP
  • In conjunction with the School Psychologist, serve as a liaison between BHMS, families, outside support, and the Department of Education when necessary
  • Conduct admissions assessments for students applying to grades 4-8 at BHMS
  • Provide lunch and recess coverage for Upper Elementary and Middle School students
  • Chaperone overnight trips when necessary
