About The Position

We’re looking for a Learning Experience Design (LXD) Specialist to provide a full range of services including planning, designing, developing, and coordinating new and existing professional development, onboarding and compliance training programs for the Laboratory. You will use a systematic approach to training, development, analysis, and instructional design for adult learners, leveraging human-centered design, the latest learning systems, web-development apps, and graphic art tools to build advanced training programs. These positions are in the Human Resources (HR) Directorate and report to the Learning and Development (L&D) Group Leader in the Workforce Development (WD) Division. Hybrid options are available for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education Technology, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant experience implementing instructional technology models and designs, applying adult learning theory, web-based training interface design, simulations, interactivity, hypermedia, SCORM, xAPI, and tutorials in training applications.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with course authoring software such as Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise, Camtasia, Lectora, Adobe Captivate, or others.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience managing instructional design and learning development projects, from inception to delivery, that focus on the integration of adult learning principles and applying a variety of web-based training interface designs.
  • Experience with Adobe CC applications used for multimedia design such as Illustrator, Photoshop, In Design, Premier, Acrobat Pro, and Audition.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication, interpersonal facilitation and collaboration skills necessary to assess, edit, present, explain, advise, influence, and communicate course content and complex information to all levels of personnel.
  • Advanced analytical, decision-making, critical-thinking and project management skills in instructional design relates to performing Structured Job Task Analyses (SJTA), scope identification, design specifications and writing performance-based objectives in curriculum development.
  • Effective organization, project-management, and self-management skills with detail orientation necessary to manage multiple complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and follow-through.
  • Experience influencing and working effectively independently and in a team environment/matrixed organization with broad cross section of people and organizations, and the ability to manage complex projects/tight deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Intermediate to advanced skills with graphic design tools, such as Adobe Ai, to design, draw, and modify vector, SGV, and other graphic formats for translating concepts and written content into visual descriptions and presentation.
  • Basic understanding of animation concepts such as frame rates, timelines, and working in multiple layers on a stage.
  • Experience importing raw video clips into non-linear tools (e.g., Adobe Premier, Final Cut Pro) for short-form video and sound editing, post-production, and export.
  • Experience with other design tools such as Snagit, Media Encoder, After Effects, Canva, Pixlr, or GIMP a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Leverage and apply current instructional design theories, methodologies and best practices to assess stakeholder needs, analyze and evaluate impacts and interdependencies, analyze complex content, identify appropriate instructional strategies and tactics, identify target audiences, determine appropriate training formats, define job tasks and learner environments, form evaluation strategies, monitor changes in procedures and policies, discover lessons learned, audit findings for impact, and revise training materials as needed.
  • Design course goals, learning objectives, and instructional content in multiple formats (in-person classroom ILT, virtual ILT, eLearning, web-based applications, micromedia) including text, script writing and narration, storyboards, graphic elements, audio, video, scenarios and simulations, test questions, participant materials, instructor guides, job aids and supporting web resources to engage employees in the learning process, encourage course participation and meet the needs of the adult learner.
  • Use Articulate Storyline in Microsoft Windows 11 to design and develop online learning solutions. Ensure content integrity, accuracy, and appropriateness for all learning formats. Ensure all learning solutions meet the design team’s specifications and standards. Leverage existing content, where practical, for course development initiatives.
  • Design and develop complex courses using interdisciplinary elements (e.g., interaction design, user experience design, graphic design, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, instructional design), innovative technology, multimedia and learning software in the instructional design process to produce web-based courses, ensure courses are accessible, current, consistent across the Lab, and delivered on schedule.
  • Stay current and expand knowledge of instructional design, eLearning industry trends, learning systems, and related technology such as web-based design methodologies and adult education.
  • Work independently, cross-functionally, and within teams. Build strong, collegial working relationships and alliances to effectively engage with all levels of management and employees, to include interviewing and collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs) and team members to prioritize requests, establish appropriate training program objectives, negotiate deadlines, present drafts, and quickly assess, design, develop and deploy appropriate learning solutions that are based on analysis and needs assessment.
  • Conduct ongoing maintenance of all courseware. Monitor, interpret and implement instructional design changes in policies and procedures, orders, and other relevant regulatory standards to maintain LLNL HR accountability and influence others.
  • Publish digital resources using sharable content object reference models (SCORM) and xAPI (Experience API or Tin Can) to create, share, and reuse online training materials across different systems and contexts.
  • Create design plans, release plans, and project plans for your assigned work. See projects through start-to-finish, manage multiple tasks and milestones simultaneously, complete follow-up actions in a timely manner, and meet all targeted deadlines.
  • Be flexible and adapt quickly and easily to changing requirements and needs as the workforce organizational development (WOD) service delivery model continues to evolve.
